Moblin v2.1 Feature Summary

In addition to the various new features, this new version of Moblin includes several hundred bug fixes and incorporates feedback from users and the developer community. Much polish and performance improvement was accomplished within this release from the Moblin developers. New features in Moblin v2.1 for netbooks and nettops include:

  • Internet Browser. After much work, we are including a new internet browser application that far exceeds our previous browser performance and adds full support for features such as plug-in support and add-ons. Many thanks to Moblin users and the developer community for their feedback and contributions.
  • 3G Data Support. Support for 3G data connections using the Ericsson* MBM 3G modems. Support for additional 3G modems is planned for future releases.
  • Application Installer Integration. The Moblin Application Installer is integrated and provides a logically categorized list of applications that you can choose to install. The selection of applications that appears within the Moblin Application Installer comes from the Moblin Garage.
  • Clutter 1.0. With this new version of Moblin, we are releasing Clutter 1.0, the Moblin animation framework.
  • Bluetooth* Device Support. Bluetooth* device discovery and pairing now supported via a new panel in the toolbar, which supports Bluetooth* audio devices, input devices (keyboards, mice), OBEX file transfer, and using a Bluetooth* phone as a 3G modem.
  • Connection Manager. Connection Manager (ConnMan) has significant modifications particularly in the areas of performance and reliability. The new version of ConnMan now supports Ethernet, WiFi, WiMAX, and 3G.
  • Nettop Support. UI scaling is provided for a wide range of nettop resolutions, including the ability to show more information in the Myzone panel based on the available screen space.

No Wifi on Samsung N140

Moblin looks great. I'd like to use it on my Samsung N140. But there is one problem. I get no wifi-conection.
I hope this will be fixed soon. So long I've to use my windows 7...
Is there anyone who can explain me to get Moblin running on my Samsung N140???
Is there a blog where I can find a step by step guide?
I'am a newbie on linux, sorry...

No Wifi

Moblin looks great, but unfortunately no wifi support on Samsung n130 / n140. (Realtek 8192, see bug 7654)

No support for GMA500 ... rendering many netbooks useless!

Again a bold statement "Platforms with the GMA-500, ... are not supported" without any clarification or plan w.r.t. support for these platforms. Silly to see that Intel is promoting and selling Atom/Poulsbo combi's, big note-/netbook manufacturers are buying and selling it , and all claiming that there is Linux support for the GMA-500 in this combi.
Should we keep avoiding buying the Atom/Poulsbo chipset? At least I had to advise a company to look for something else then the Atom/Poulsbo chipset, due to lack of support for GMA-500 in Linux. So far my advise appeared to be right and it looks like it will stay right, right?

GMA-500

Hi, I have acer aspire one 150BD with moblin 2.1 final and my platform are GMA 500 and works wonderfull. I think that many platforms like this are supported.

....right

The GMA-500 linux driver was written by an out-sourced company "Tungsten Graphics", the driver uses a proprietary module which is over a year old (closer to 2), and won't work with the current kernel versions, Here's a great rant article for those who are wondering why there is no support for this chipset with moblin....

good reading!

Yes You Are Right

Hello All
Yes its right. Why in the heavens cant we support Intel GMA 500? Most of the netbooks available in India in the 11.1 inch & higher category use Intel GMA 500. Here is a list:
Acer Aspire One 751h (This One Looks Like A Nymph, Believe Me You Have To See It)
Asus Eee PC 1101h
..
..
A Lot More.
So I ask the question again why?
So let me rephrase my situation I am hunting a netbook which will support my OS & not the other way round!!! This must be the first time I would be doing this!!!. Now we know the value of Windows!!! It runs on any God Damn Hardware.
This is the problem with open source. It renders a wide range of community unable to use the products (Linux is an exception now but wasnt always so).
I will not be spending much time on getting my hands on a piece of hardware that can run Moblin v2.1.
Had the Intel GMA 500 support been there I would be typing something more positive on an Acer Aspire One 751h assuming network would be working.
A very pathetic situation :-(

Thanks

A Way Out!!!!!

Hello All Moblin Lovers
I have found a temporary solution to the problem. I dont claim to be the first one though.
http://gadgetmix.com/index/new-gma-500-poulsbo-drivers-for-the-ubuntu-9-...
It seems Ubuntu had the forsight to include the drivers for GMA 500 in their build.
Please read about the situation on
http://www.happyassassin.net/2009/01/30/intel-gma-500-poulsbo-graphics-o...
Lets review the situation.
1) Ubuntu takes Moblin
2) Realises that without GMA 500 its a failure
3) Gets a crappy but working driver & releases it before Intel can get its release out
Future
4) Brand Moblin gets associated with Ubuntu
5) Rest is easy to figure out
I hope Mr Imad is listening.
If not let me clarify. I am going to install Ubuntu's version of Intel's product just because Intel was too slow to get its work out.
People reading this please do the same.
Thanks

I Switched

Hello
As I predicted I went for the Acer Aspire One 715h with explicit cognizance that it wil not support Moblin or is it the other way around. Any which way Moblin just lost a prospective user. Oh I forgot in Open Source space that is immaterial (Or am I wrong? Secretly I Wish I Am Wrong). Now we know why Windows is the most widely used operating system.
Thanks

This Is The Problem

This exemplifies the basic problem we have with content & information distribution systems. The information is not available on parent website but some obscure one in some different part of the world has titbits on it.
God help us. I cant ever fathom how much time I have spent seeking such information on the parent site.
Mr Imad please take note.
Thanks
