MOBLIN v2.0, The Moblin GARAGE, and Moblin v2.1

The Moblin steering committee is pleased to announce three exciting new developments within the Moblin project.

  • The project release of Moblin v2.0 for Intel Atom* Processor based netbooks.
  • A preview of the Moblin Garage and Moblin Application Installer.
  • A community preview release of Moblin v2.1 for Intel Atom* Processor based netbooks and nettops for early development.

Moblin v2.0:

The project release of Moblin v2.0 is now available. With this community release you can expect to see OSVs and OEMs shipping products based on Moblin v2.0 for netbooks. Moblin v2.0 features a rich user interface that was developed from the ground up, for netbook form factors and usage models, to provide an outstanding visual user experience that integrates internet browsing, media consumption, and social networking.

Download Moblin v2.0 and experience it for yourself.

The Moblin Garage and Moblin Application Installer:

You can now browse and easily install new applications on your Moblin based netbook, using the Moblin Garage and Moblin Application Installer.

The Moblin Garage is an online applications catalog that contains free/open source software applications released under a recognized open source license along with proprietary applications redistributed at no cost.

The available applications are installed through the use of the Moblin Application Installer, which is a client application that is launched from the Moblin myzone panel. The Moblin Application Installer provides a logically categorized list of applications that you can choose to install. The selection of applications that appear within the Moblin Application Installer comes from the Moblin Garage.

Preview the Moblin Garage and Moblin Application Installer by taking it for a test drive. This is an early preview release of the Moblin Application Installer and it is still in active testing and development.

Moblin v2.1:

Moblin v2.1 will be an incremental release over Moblin v2.0 and is the next release stream for adding new features and developments. Moblin v2.1 will be used as the base for future new user experience support for Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs), in-vehicle infotainment (IVI), and embedded devices, such as media phones. The release target for Moblin v2.1 for netbooks and nettops is expected to release to the community in Q4 2009. The Moblin v2.1 release for netbooks and nettops will include many community and customer requested enhancements; for example, support for additional nettop screen resolutions, myzone improvements, IM improvements, better language support, updated kernel, Moblin Garage, Moblin Application Installer, 3G data support, and Bluetooth. The Moblin v2.1 release timing for other user experiences, such as MID, IVI and embedded devices, will align with the availability and release of those hardware platforms.

We invite those developers who are interested in an early look to download Moblin v2.1. The Moblin v2.1 image is provided as a community preview and is in very early and active development.

We would like to encourage everyone to install the final Moblin v2.0 image, preview the Moblin Garage capabilities, and continue to monitor the Moblin v2.1 development progress. Share your experience with us through bugzilla or on the developer mailing list. It's with your feedback and community support that we can continue to innovate and provide further enhancements to Moblin.

Moblin images require an Intel Atom* processor based netbook or nettop. The following platforms are what we have been using for testing purposes: Acer AspireOne*; Asus eeePC* 901; 1005ha; 1008ha; Dell Mini* 9; 10, and 10v, MSI Wind*; Toshiba NB205-XX*; and Samsung NC10*.

Install OpenOffice in Moblin v2.0

I have successfully installed the OpenOffice into the Moblin v2.0. However, how could I add the shortcut of the programs inside the OpenOffice into the "Application" list in desktop of Moblin?

Openoffice.org Desktop Intergration

I've downloaded and installed Moblin v2.1 on my Acer Aspire One. I downloaded OOO from the openoffice.org website and followed the installation instructions contained here: http://download.openoffice.org/common/instructions.html#linux
The final step, desktop-intergration, use the Fedora rpm. It works like magic :-)

Browser & email client

Saw adverse comments on the built in browser. I tried firefox and thunderbird. But they take up so much screen space. Particularly the new thunderbird release with its own ThunderBrowser will need some kind of joystick to speed around the screen and still read something. Whereas the built in browser and email client are nice. Only problem is when you actually want to respond to some email. The display and writing sections are separate and that is really clumsy.

So, is Moblin on Netbook is an advance competition for the "smartbook" that the telecom networks will soon start pushing?

One area where improvements are always welcome is the management of the address book. With a built in SyncML (which is the highlight of Moblin, for me) there could be more innovation to the address book. Already it is much better than many PIMs (in both windows and linux worlds), but the gold standard would be the extinct Palm Desktop. No one ever has been able to match it (my opinion). Contact/ address management is the core of PIM, and it should be linked to Calendar also.

Works well... except...

I'm encountering a few bugs here that hopefully give a little information to the developers... I'm using an MSI Wind U100 with Moblin 2.1.

My wireless access point has WPA-2 encryption and keeps kicking out the connection randomly. It will connect just fine and remain connected for around 5 minutes, then it loses the connection and can't find the access point until I restart the wireless card. I would assume this has to do with the RealTek issues that other members have mentioned.

My second issue is with the People tab. Although I can connect to my accounts via Messenger, my buddy list won't be populated on the friends tab at all. It either 1) Doesn't see that I'm online at all or 2) Can't resolve the accounts. Clicking to set up accounts from the People tab takes me directly to the accounts window that says I'm online. Something is quite wrong there.

Beyond that, I've had issues installing software (Pidgin specifically) that will indicate that it has installed correctly, but won't insert it into my Applications tab. Surely, I can't be the only one seeing this.

Love the OS, guys! It has great potential and I can't wait to preview future releases! :D

got WiFi to work on HP Mini 1000 (1116nr) with Moblin v2.0

for all those seeking WiFi help on their HP Mini's - I managed to get it to work today on my 1116nr using a modified version of the "Slaine" Dell Mini guide here:

http://slaine.org/_slaine/Dell_Mini_9.html

All credit to him for doing the hard part.

Prerequisites:
* HP fully BIOS updated - get updates from support.hp.com Use the "linux" bios update by making a flash drive image for boot/update

* Moblin v2.0 final installed on HP and running

* HP connected to internet via WIRED ethernet - which works out of the box

Once connected you should be able to get half way through step 6 in the Slaine.org guide.

Upon running the second half of step 6: "rpmbuild --rebuild" etc... you may get the same thing I did... "can't find that file". Use Moblin's file browser to rename the file to something smaller like moblin.src.rpm... then try it again. It is strangely path-length limited. This is all I had to do.

Then when you get to step 7, Slaine's command line also will not work for you. Instead just navigate to the same path shown in the guide through the file system... right-click on the w1-kmod-5.10.91.9.3-1.moblin.i586.rpm and tell it to install it with the package installer. It actually works... it will ask you to confirm that the file has no signature and it will ask for your password so it can run it's own "sudo"...

stable effective wireless in Moblin v2.0 on the HP Mini 1000 series. Everything else works great... and FAST!

No wifi on msi Wind

I 've installed on my MSI Wind but the Wifi card is not working out of the box :(

I have just upgraded to the

I have just upgraded to the "final" build of v2 and was delighted to see that the touchpad now works on the Wind but wifi no longer does. Useless without it. I am hoping that "final" doesn't mean that and that there will be a wifi fix for this model. The MSI Wind ought to be taken off the compatible list given the number of people who have the same problem.

msi wind - wifi

i agree. its not completely there with the wind - although it was!! no wifi all else is ok. i took a chance and upgraded to 2.1 but the problem still persists.

does anyone have a work around.

i fear that if i cannnot get wifi working within the next few days i will stop waiting and use windows 7 in hibernate mode for the quick boot. i do like the moblin idea but not practicle for me without wifi.

HP Mini 1000 Wi-Fi

Does the 2.1 beta support Wi-Fi in HP Mini 1000 netbooks?

Problem with live SD on eee 901

The MD5 of my Moblin 2.0 Final download checks against what is posted here
I am using this procedure on XP
1. Boot as administrator
2. Use Panasonic SD formatting utility to ensure a clean SD
3. Use Win 32 Disk Imager to write the image to SD
4. When it's done, exit out of Win 32 Disk Imager
5. Safely remove the SD from XP

When I try to boot in my 901, using ESC to select the SD card, I get:
~
[ 7.770091] SQUASHFS error: squashfs_read_data failed to read block 0x2cb0e2ec
[ 7.774428] SQUASHFS error: Unable to read metadata cache entry [2cb0e2ec]
[ 7.778715] SQUASHFS error: Unable to read inode 0x8d980dd8
mount: /dev/loop2: can't read superblock
Bug in initramfs /init detected. Dropping into a shell. Good luck!
Bash-3.2#

This happens with multiple SD cards, and H2Testw says the cards are good.
This exact same procedure produces SD cards that boot OK when used with the 20090721 and 20090802 release.
It fails the same way with the 20090821 release.
It fails the same way in my 1000ha

I have tried the following with no effect

  • set both 901 SDDs to Not Installed in the BIOS
  • set boot from Removable Disk first in the BIOS
  • thinking it might be a conflict with GRUB on one of the SDDs, I restored the 901 from the XP recovery disk

Update: I used ImgBurn in XP to burn the Moblin 2.0 Final img to a DVD disk, and it WILL boot from this disk on my 901. At some point, I got my external drive locked up in some state where it would not boot anything from it. After I resolved that, it will repeatably boot from the disk. If you have the SD described above in the 901 at the same time as you are trying to boot from the DVD, it will get confused and fail, but otherwise the DVD boots reliably. The SD will not boot under any circumstances I have as yet tried.

UPDATE: It will install to the 901 SSD from the DVD, and works hugely better than off of the DVD. In fact, I am adding this update from Moblin. I did want to run it from a live SD though, because I don't really have enough space in my 901 to leave it on the SSD.

Steve

Good work

Hi,

this is the OS I want see on netbook.
But in your tested device list, there is the eee 1005ha but on both versions 2.0 final and 2.1 alpha doesnt work the wired network adapter...
So on this is the best OS for netbooks, to Surf listen music or youtube, write emails and make messaging. But we need codecs for m4a aac and xvid...

Samsung N510 - Intel& NVidia ION platform

actual moblin v2.0 doesn't work. will this new netbook plaform (intel/nvidia) be supported in next release like 2.1 ?

Anyone getting any love from Bluetooth?

Got the bluetooth adapter recognized but unable to achieve any pairing. Anyone having any luck?

Using 2.1 obviously!

TIA

Bluetooth Love?

did you get a response from anyone?

supported

Is there a list somewhere of what hardware is supported and what is working?

For the record, I just tried the Live Image of 2.0 release, and Wifi still isn't working on the Lenovo S10.

It works fine in Ubuntu tho... along with my 3G modem as well... really can it be that hard? The number of netbooks out there is not huge, especially for a distro that claims to specifically target Netbooks.

To the one who asked if

To the one who asked if Moblin was released: Did you even read the posting you commented on?

is moblin done?

hello! im a little slow in mind, and just found out of Moblin, when does it get released? could someone answer me? and if it's released, could somebody tell me where i download it?

This is awesome!

I am totally in love with Moblin. I just started using it and it is great. Just put some elbow grease into getting the kinks and bugs out first. Once the kinks and bugs are out you can start working on some App advancement.

Facebook, WordPress, Digg, Reddit, the other social stuff.

Man .. Moblin is way better then I thought.

Main gripes:
I would like a shelf of some kind so I can access windows in the same zone easier.
Cannot min or maximize. Minimize is not as important as maximize. What to do about the top bar I wonder.
The minor bugs.

Great work!! And as a previous membor of the Canonical forums I totally see the inspiration of the Dell Mini community. Layout looks familiar, XFCE is part of the package. We were heard!

The UI of moblin is geared

The UI of moblin is geared for efficiency in playing media, internet, and social networking...

What's the point of a great UI if:

1: No codecs... My god! if you can't put codecs inclusive with moblin at least give instructions on how to do so... EASY instructions.

2. Moblin Browser sucks big time. And even if you replace it with firefox as prefered application... Clicking the internet tab on mzone will still use Moblin browser.

3. No facebook yet...

I agree on the browser

Hitting the internet tab should take you to your preferred browser instead of the awful on supplied with Moblin - the option to set the default to opera, firefox or flock would be so much better!

Fluendo has an MP3 codec for

Fluendo has an MP3 codec for free. It's in beta too. They are putting that out there. I had to build the Wifi driver for my system.

Can you give details on how

Can you give details on how you built your wifi drivers I have been struggling with this all morning.

TIA

yeah np.

It's all thanks to Slaine. He is the champ. Thanks Slaine!!!

Not sure if it is exact. I cannot copy & paste from the URL line. :P

Compaq 735EO doesnt work.

The booting comes to halt with only the wallpaper showing, ive tried different memory sticks, both 2.0 and 2.1 images and everything.

same error messages as with other HP netbooks below.

Does this one support the convertible units?

I really like the consistent look, feel and feature set of the Moblin distro, but the last version lacked touch-screen and rotation support.
Does this version support those features?

Non-oss repository.

Somehow I think it's a bad idea to call it stable version. There are way too many bugs, so new users, that think it's safe to use it, will be surprised, that so many thing don't work.

Besides that Moblin seriously needs GOOD repository with atleast gstreamer plugins, so we can listen things that media player indexes (seriously - what's the point of showing user that he has for instance Iron Maiden album, if it is in mp3 and moblin doesn't have codecs to play that?).

I saw someone saying that we can compile needed plugin on our own. Compiling? On Atom Processor? Wouldn't try that ! (well, I did, but it took to long, and in the end there were errors, so I gave up)

GMA500

Another voice for GMA500 support... The crazy dance we have to do to get the thing working with Kubuntu Karmik is amazing, and I was hoping for updated support in moblin. After all, you guys seem to be able to pump out W7 drivers almost every week, so why not Linux?

Anybody

Maybe anybody can ask information on the mailing list?

No reply to my question... I

No reply to my question... I have been waiting since may for moblin to fix the wifi in HP mini 2140. But I guess that hasn't happened yet.

The main problem with moblin is that you don't get information. You can't get your questions answered.

Forums please!!! Make a user-friendly forums and just don't stick with bugzilla. Yes I am noob with this bugzilla and linux stuff but isn't this what moblin is for? To make a linux based OS strong enough to compete with windows and mac on the netbook level? To revolutionize how we use computers?

How on earth would you guys do that if you can't make answer the questions and concerns of the noob population who compromise 90% of the whole world population?

> I have been waiting since

> I have been waiting since may for moblin to fix the wifi in HP mini 2140

Your netbook has Broadcom wireless. As far as I know Broadcom has not released their drivers as open source. I'm not sure what Moblin can do here?

> You can't get your questions answered.

Please try the mailing list while waiting for the forums to arrive, blog comments are definitely the worst place to ask for help. Or, for a longer term solution, spend the ten minutes needed to learn how to file bugs in the bugzilla: this way you'll get notified if there is a change in the bugs situation.

As bad as beta version

Sorry to say that I am still very much disapointed. There are far too many impotant things that are broken:
- Hidden wifi network cannot connect
- Keyboard layout change is impossible, always seg fault
- Language change does not work
- no facebook and others shoult be available by default
- navigation in applications is not so user friendly

looks like it is image from last month to me.

Are you really serious in commercialising such things at this stage?

Hidden Network

Hidden network does work perfectly, just add a new network and put in your data...

Of course that was 1st thing

Of course that was 1st thing that I tried. My network uses WPA/TSIk. Just cannot connect while hidden. Not hidden works.

GMA500(Poulsbo) driver..

I'm trying to run GMA500 on viliv S5. And Moblin version is 2.0.
From now, I could run X window but didn't run any other moblin applications including Mutter.
Is there anybody can operate GMA500 on Moblin?

Dell Mini 9 and Wireless

The wireless on the Dell Mini 9 does not work out of the box. Or maybe I am doing something wrong? Anyone?

Slaine

Slaine has a tut on how to get WiFi on your Dell Mini 9: I linked on twitter. (@prof_ebral).

Dell mini

No you don't, the Dell mini 10 doesn't work out of box too...

GMA500

I can't take the lack of support for the GMA500. Linux driver support is no where near that of Windows. Also the currently available Windows driver for XP does not support opengl 2.0. XBMC and Boxee wont run without it. Please add a stable, and fully functional gma500 driver to moblin; I want to use moblin!

eeepc 901: static ip ra0 ????

how could I configure an static ip on ra0?
its frustrating !!!!!

thanks in advance

Wifi fails on Aspire One A150

I've tried several of the beta refreshes over the months and even with the final build I'm still not able to connect to my network via wireless on my A150. I always end up with the "connection failed" message.

Good job done, but some negative things...

My System: Eee 1000h

what works since 2.0 beta: install, boot, wifi, browser,IM,installing software, zones,my zone etc.

Tested the 2.1 preview image:

pros:
-garage: installing works fine, running apps runs fine
-really fast boot
-faster graphics
-better functionality

cons:
-no facebook support!
-browser chrashes, bad support for googlemail (I'll post a bugreport)
-no syncing of google calendar (Bug 5871)

I think you've done a good job in the last few months. But there are some (or many) things which have to improove quickly.

calendar sync with Google

> -no syncing of google calendar (Bug 5871)

jochenh, you have misunderstood: that bug is not about not syncing with google, it's about the UI letting users even try things Google does not support. The issue here is that Google does not support synchronization for anything else than the addressbook... We will certainly work with them if they start doing it.

Google does support Caldav, and that is something we may want to support for remote calendar access... I've filed an enhancement bug (6433) on that, please add any relevant comments there (comments on blogs are easy to miss).

Yes your right the bug isn't

Yes your right the bug isn't about no syncing of google calender. It only shows that people wanted to sync with default settings and it didnt work with sync ml.

Thanks for adding this new Bug, I'll post some additional information which may helps.

So it has to be:
-no syncing with google calendar (Bug 6433)

What on earth are you doing?

So eh... I'm confused what exactly is this OS supposed to be for? It surely cannot be targeted towards netbooks as it hardly supports any. OK that's a small (and I do mean small) exaggeration. A lot of people in my circles still believe this to be a kickass system for netbooks even though only a few has been able to actually get it running on their respective netbooks.

Intel, get your head out of your ... and add support for your own damn GMA500 geez!

GMA500

Hmmm it seemsl there isn't still support for the video card GMA500 (in Dell mini 10,10v,12, and much other netbook)...
Anybody?

(for the two first comment it's not very joyful^^)

Didn't Dell Release the Mini

Didn't Dell Release the Mini 10v with Moblin pre isntalled? Yes, my twitter feed and Dell Followers said they had released it. Put some pressure on Dell because they have the beans.

Sort of...

Dell's Mini 10v has Ubuntu Moblin Remix preinstalled. It's more or less the same thing from the perspective of the end user though...

Put some pressure on Dell to

Put some pressure on Dell to get support for the GMA500. If they have an OS that supports it, they are the go to people right now.

HP mini 2140

1st!!!

Is this the stable release? Does HP mini 2140's broadcom wifi work well on this?
