Moblin v2.0 beta for Netbooks and Nettops - It's here...

The Moblin steering committee is happy to release the Moblin v2.0 beta for netbooks and nettops for developer testing. With this release, developers can begin to experience and work with the source code of the visually rich, interactive user interface designed for Intel Atom based netbooks. The Moblin v2.0 user experience has been designed from the ground up to provide unique ways to engage with the internet, aggregate your social networking activity, and enjoy your media content. The new user experience and core applications were developed using the Clutter animation framework, leveraging heavily from GL and the physics engine.

Moblin v2.0 Netbook Beta

Experience it for yourself. Download the Moblin v2.0 Netbook beta images and take it for a test drive. View the user experience video, take a look at the screen shots, or view the preliminary user guide.

We would like to invite and encourage everyone to test the beta. We feel the code has reached a level where both developers and enthusiasts can play with it. While fine tuning, bug fixing, and polishing is ongoing, so is performance improvement, all of which you should start seeing rolled into the weekly builds. We encourage anyone to test it and provide feedback to us through bugzilla or on the developer mailing list. Only with your feedback can we further enhance the user experience.

Moblin v2.0 Beta Feature Summary

  • New, visually rich user experience, optimized for netbook and nettops, building on the latest open source graphics technology, such as Clutter, DRI2, and KMS. The user experience is provided mainly through the toolbar and panels, available at the top of the screen.
  • The myzone, acting as the 'home screen' panel. It provides instant access to your synchronized calendar, tasks, appointments, recently used files, and real-time updates from your friends on social networking sites.
  • Aggregation of your social networking content. This provides you with the ability to see your social networking activities on one screen, easily interact with your friends, and update your status and site information. Twitter and Last.fm are the currently supported social networking sites, with more to come.
  • A web browser optimized for the Moblin 2.0 netbook user interface. Based on the latest Mozilla browser technology revised into a Clutter shell, the browser gives you access to the whole internet, as well as advanced features, such as video embedding and the latest Flash plug-in, while integrating seamlessly into the user interface.
  • A 'Zoomable' media player. This player brings your media collection to life as you zoom from viewing all media down to focusing on an individual picture, movie, or audio track. The media player can detect and index media on external USB devices, as well as UPnP devices on your network.
  • A user interface for connection management and an updated connection manager (ConnMan).
  • And, of course, support for Linux desktop applications. Moblin is built using GNOME Mobile Technologies and supports existing Linux desktop applications.

From here on out, we will focus on performance, bug fixing, fine tuning, and polishing. We post beta builds weekly in the download area.

Moblin images should work on Intel based netbooks and nettops, we've been testing with the following platforms: Acer Aspire*One, Asus eeePC* 901, 1000H, Dell Mini 9, MSI Wind, Lenovo S10, Samsung NC10, HP Mini 1010 and 1120NR (wired networking only for now).

solution how to como instalar codecs gsstreamer en on moblin

note:this text is in Spanish using google translator to follow the steps because the commands are in English (note you can also use the translator to give greetings and thanks for clarifying that you are speaking English to know the details) peace

hola amiguetes otra solucion para todos

vamos a solapa aplicaciones y dentro en accesorios click en terminal copiamos en comando pegamos y enter
(puede que pida password, es la que te pidio cuando instalaste moblin)

sudo yum install gcc flex bison make diffutils glib2-devel pango-devel cairo-devel liboil-devel alsa-lib-devel libtheora-devel libvorbis-devel libogg-devel

vale esto tarda un rato es hora de un te (esta vez con limon ;p ) o si quieres vamos avanzando al siguiente paso ya que esto se hace en segundo plano es decir continuemos.

vamos a http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/src

make

esto lo compilara y creara un ejecutable de lo que compilamos , si termino seguiente comando y intro.

sudo make install

ya esta y este mismo proceso debemos repetirlo en las otras carpetas en el orden indicado
y de la misma manera

reiniciamos y listo videos y mp3

nota: puedes bajarte banshee o otro reproductor ya que los codecs los tienes maquina!!!

solution how to como instalar openoffice 3.1 en in moblin

this text is in Spanish using google translator to follow the steps because the commands are in English (note this version and the link is in Spanish but also in the official page of openoffice you can find them)

descargamos este archivo (copiar enlace y pegar en navegador)

http://openoffice.bouncer.osuosl.org/?product=OpenOffice.org&os=linuxint...

y a disfrutar

HP mini 1115nr

Great distro. Had to reload the OS after grub on my Fedora install decided that Windows XP didn't exist. In the process of finding a solution I ran into this.

After using it for two weeks I have to say that I am rather impressed with it. Though I find the zones a bit clunky to use. Is it possible to throw a toolbar somewhere with the separate desktops on it? Might make using multiple desktops a little easier.

Anyways. The only problems I had were with the Broadcom driver(resolved), Open Office, and an annoying issue with java(unresolved).

I am following the directions from the Java website to the letter and Firefox either doesn't recognize it or the symbolic link is broken.

And for some reason the Open Office install didn't catch(probably because of the lack of java). I know there is Abi Word and for the purposes of school it will work great. However I need the spreadsheet and database applications for work. Was wondering if anyone could point me on the right direction on both issues.

update

Got Java installed. Wonder if anyone knows how to uninstal then perform a sucessfull install of Open Office?

How to install Java

If you could please tell me how you managed to install java or send a link to where it tells you how to. It would be greatly aprreciated. :D

Follow the instructions here:

Follow the instructions here: http://java.com/en/download/help/5000010500.xml#rpm do the rpm version.

Update 2

BOOYAH!!!!

After many hours I think I finally figured out how to install Open Office on Moblin. Well you can do the install from the file browser but it does it in usr. Not good since it wont install the shortcuts or java.

Go here http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/w/images/7/7e/Installation_Guide_OOo... and get the installation pdf. Go into the terminal and su into root and scroll down to the RPM install section. The su part is doubly important since you need to be in root to install java. I tried adding the symbolic link from a previous install of java and it wouldn't recognize it.

Follow the RPM directions up to the desktop-integration command. When you get to step 7 they give you this command string rpm -Uvh openoffice.org-dist-menus-release.noarch.rpm. Use this for dist and release rpm -Uvh openoffice.org3.1-redhat-menus-3.1-9420.noarch.rpm.

Since this version of Moblin is based off of Fedora and since Fedora was bought out by Redhat. It's the logical choice.

Anyways. The icons popped up in the office section of the applications menu and the program seems to work.

Figured since this was a point of contention some people would like to know.

Congratulations!

yet it would be far better if they can just add the entire office suite in the software manager to make our life more easier.

Social Networking

What are the possibilities that we'll see support for free and open source network services in the future? I note that the two supported now are ones that have popular FLOSS alternatives (Identi.ca for Twitter, Libre.fm for Last.fm) -- was that on purpose? Should be easy to port.

AMD64 CPU

why this OS only supported atom CPU
how i can testing this OS with amd64

Installing Moblin on Samsung N110

When I try to install Moblin on an USB stick (8GB) after a reboot the loader will stop with this errormessage:

[ 1.245511] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
unknown-block(0,0)
[ 1.246079] [drm:intelfb_panic] *ERROR* panic occurred, switching back
to text console

I tried to install several times of different USB-sticks, still the same error.

Who can help? What is happening? How can I solve this problem?

Same here

I have the samsun nc10 and i'm getting the exact same error as you...

I have no idea what's causing it...I wonder if anyone can help us =/

Cheers

Open source is the way to go. I had Linux Puppy on my U100 MSI Wind, will have to try out the Moblin linux platform. Thanks!

wi-fi problem on hp mini1035 nr

i am testing the moblin v2.1 on my hp mini netbook. wi-fi is not working although i followed the slaine`s method. this method gives error at "rpmbuild stage......"
could some body please help us!
moblin is a great OS/work.. but it still needs improvements.
thanks

No new releases. No news of

No new releases.

No news of why there are no new releases.

I'm been waiting since May for a stable release. It's okay if there are no new releases but please kindly let us know what actually is going on with the development. Leaving us in the blank is not really a good idea for the growth of Moblin. Beacause right now, It just seems that moblin just dropped dead and we didn't knew about it.

You guys are lucky I still believe in this OS.

Dell Mini Help

Just gave the 2.0 final img a go on the dell mini but it is not working ,i have installed 3 different distros onto
an 8gb sandisk cruzer usb pendrive without any problems at all but with moblin it lets me ,format & partition
and setup/install moblin but after reboot i get the moblin logo and the pendrive light indicator turns off as
if theres no power and in fact i get a black screen and it seems to crash.

I have 1st boot device set to usb from the dell mini bios and i also double check this with the startup
option feature on the dell mini ,and i am sure it is booting from usb as the moblin logo apears and then
theres a system crash.

The other problem with the dell mini is that there is no working wireless , only LAN and this is with the latest
moblin release ,released yesterday 23rd ,i know that the wireless doesn't work as i tested the disc via
live boot ,and i have also checked the disc for errors from the bootup options.

I would love to know how to get this working on my usb stick as moblin seems to be the perfect OS
for my dell mini , the reason i am using an 8gb usb pendrive is that my ssd has broken and its going
to take a while before i can buy a new one ,and ubuntu is simply too bloated and slow for general use.

Info

I burned the latest moblin.img 2.0 on a blank dvd disc and i had to use a dvd disc as the image was too
large to burn onto a standard blank cd ,722mb ,i did think about overburn but couldn't find an option for
it in ubuntu, the dvd disc checks out as good in the moblin disc check.

I used a liteon external drive to burn and install moblin ,and have used this drive to install many other
distros to the usb pendrive.

The dell bios is at the original version ,has never been updated ,and i have no way of updating
as i dont have a windows OS on the dell mini.

hope someone can help

Paddy

Maybe I can help.

I had to use a 1.44GB DVD+RW. I am writing on my Moblin OS'd Netbook right now. Somewhere along the lines somebody either imagined a 722+MB CD or made one or found one. I am not sure they are common place since all mine are 700.

The Moblin team might want to remove some material from their install, if they can, focus on getting network up, then add the other stuff later after the OS is booted.

New release

The new release is out this morning, at 3H45, here ; http://mirrors.kernel.org/moblin/releases/2.0/images/

asus eee 1005h works great!

First distro with wifi working out of gate. Camera, wireless, video, all work great. My wish lists are more apps of course. Can they be gotten using a terminal "get" command?
When do we get more in the repositories.
Also any comments info on experiences with dual boot?

I would like to help create more documentation, can you point me the right direction?

Wiki and Forum are in the works

A wiki and forum for moblin are in the works and should be available soon. In the mean time, add documentation to your personal site and people will find it.

no more releases?

What's up? The last release was dated 2009/08/20. Are you not going to release a new beta?

Moblin image for the new acer 11.6 netbook with intel GMA 500

I just read under known issues that Moblin 2.0 beta does not support the Intel GMA 500 chipset. Unfortunately the new acer aspire with 11.6 screens only come with the GMA 500. Is there an effort from moblin team to add the GMA 500 platform in the near future?
=======================================================================================

The moblin 2.0 image worked fine with the Intel GMA 950 on the acer aspire netbook (10.1 screen) but does not work with the Intel GMA 500 which is on the new acer aspire (11.6 screen). Can someone tell me, if there is a new image for the intel GMA 500 or how to create a new image that will work with the Intel GMA 500.

Thanks

Jay

GMA 500

It seems that Intel will not release the linux driver for its own (in some part at least) chip - there are problems with GMA 500 on every single distro. It is strange a little bit... I am not sure if buying a GMA 500 based netbook is just a good idea - maybe nVidia Ion would be a better choice (Asus 1201N or HP/Compaq Mini 311c)? Still, I have no idea how Moblin would work on such a machine, if it does work at all.

GMA 500 support

Are there any plans to support the GMA 500 or will the Atom Z series not be supported at all? Eager to try and compare it with gOS and Jolicloud, but if an entire series of the Atom is excluded there's no real point to invest in the project as it will confuse users and split its support.

Is there any particular reason for not supporting the Atom Z after all? It seems to feature all the requirements (SSE3 etc.) but the video driver for the GM 500. Surely Intel can allocate the resources for development of a driver and eliminate the incompatibility of the system with a whole series of its target processors?

Intel's drivers

Hello, it seem nobody wants to answer to your question. Just for information, we can see at the intel download center, the driver support the platform the distribution "Moblin", so we can hope the driver will be implemented in short time...

(Sorry for spellings errors, i'm french^^)

Moblin 2.0 works great on Samsung n120

I'm using it on my Samsung n120 and everything works pretty well. I wish the Calendar and Sync tools were a wee bit more developed and easier to use, but besides that, the concept is great and it is a winner. I've showed it around to some colleagues during the recent Red Hat / JBoss Summit in Chicago and everybody liked it. Keep up the good work.

Samsung N120

Everything? Wifi, Sound, Fn keys, touchpad, etc, al works? If that's the case them I may just test this out tonight!

Dell Mini 9 Wifi Not OOB.

I had to build the Dell Mini 9 Wifi driver. Check my tweets (@prof_ebral).

HTC - SHIFT

Hey,

Howz anyone tried moblin 2 with htc shift?

Real time patch for moblin.

I actually have a real time patch with real time enhancements, can I apply that patch with Moblin V2 or V1? Can I access the Moblin V2 or V1 source code for the same? And can any one of you please give me the details for setting up bluetooth fully and accessing net through mobile gprs. And my D-Link WiFi dongle isn't getting detected at all and doesnt blink and running "connmand -n -d" says "command not found".what could be the reason? I am using Russellville Board currently with Moblin V1.Thanks in advance.

UMTS-Support ?

is it possible to enable the UMTS in this Beta ?

updating?

Is it possible to just update the installation instead of downloading and re-installing whenever a weekly beta refresh release of the Moblin distribution comes out?
Thanks, Tony

Running Live Image on Asus EEEPC 901

Jegvar

I have just managed to get Moblin working on my Eeepc 901 by doing the following.

  • When doing the Bit write of the image to the USB stick make sure you only do so on a Linux box (I did my on the 901 itself through Work > File Manager > TOOLs > Terminal ) then I used Image-Writer to do the work
  • You have to set the "boot sequence" to start with "removable device" before trying to install the Live Image else you will just get your normal OS on start up. I did this on the EeePC 901 by hitting "F2" on startup and changing the BIOS setting for "Boot sequence" (or something like that in the tabs across the top)
  • When you reboot the Eeepc with the Live Image USB stick in place make sure you press "ESC" on the boot up as it is this that gives you the option to boot from which drive and you pick the USB stick

Other things I found out in the install to the Eeepc 901

  • Once installed my BIOS "disabled" the WIFI option - weird. So if you do an install & Moblin can't find any WIFI, just go into the BIOS (F2 on start up) and enable WIFI in device management
  • I had a problem with WIFI and a WPA AP in my office (would connect by wouldn't give me a connection) but using it on my home WIFI AP with WPA seems to work fine so I think it was just a problem with that AP

I have managed to get GTalk working on it, as well as Twitter so it is starting to do what it says.
Not sure on the Calendar - would have thought it would sync up with a server (GMail is what I need) but will investigate how to do that later.
Other things:
Apps > Media > Web Cam - "Cheese" works but need to find out how to do video calls with it
Apps > Media > Media Player - Looks good esp. "Big buck bunny" which is a nice showcase for it. Only problems were the media player doesn't fast forward using arrow keys (essential for watching longer movies). Audio works well but the supplied "Muzak" is lift quality jazz. Can someone pick some funky and go ahead music for this system to demo it rather than limp and disinterested. How about looking into a Myspace feed to provide the top artists there ?

Not sure on UPNP as it can't find my Media server straight off - but will play and update.

Loving your work everyone

eee 900a

With the latest release I can finally boot from a flash card on my eee 900a (I'll scrub the internal drive once Moblin is finished) and I can use Dropbox (Fedora 10 version). Now if there was just an easy way to install other gstreamer codecs I'd be almost done. Thanks Moblin people - I love it.

Using dropbox on moblin

I was unsuccessful installing the fedora10 version of dropbox on my acer aspire one AOA150. How did you run the install? I'm fairly inexperienced. I'll just say Moblin is so very cool it's finally convinced me to learn the ins and outs of linux. Dropbox is a pretty integral part of how I work so I'd love to get it working.

vbox??

Has anybody been able to get this to boot in virtualbox? I would love to test this on my mini9 but not unless I can do it in vbox.

I have tried two different builds and have not gotten this to install in vbox.

Works (mostly) fine on Toshiba N205

Hey,

Just tried Moblin 2 on a Toshiba N205 -- and it's fantastic! The sound didn't seem to work, but the wifi did, flash did, and all the apps (including neverball... wow!) worked great.

Some more polish and this will be fantastic!

Toshiba N205

I too just installed the software on my Toshiba N205. I had the same issues with sound but everything else works just fine, and the software runs very fast. This installation stamped on my hidden recovery partition but I am fed up with XP so that is not all that bad.

Slaine's instruction don't work with 21th release

I just installed the latest beta datet 07/21/09. Tried installing the broadcom wifi according to slaines new instructions:
http://slaine.org/_slaine/Dell_Mini_9.html

When running 'sudo yum groupinstall “Development Tools”' I get some dependency errors. Can anyone help? Maybe Glen Gray reads this and can help?
I already tried an Atheros based wifi but found that it draws about 1.2 watts more than the broadcom wifi, measured with a power meter! This makes me want to stick with it.

Some days later the

Some days later the rpmdevtools and "Development Tools" load and install fine.

Now there is a new error when following SLAINE's instructions: When I try to download the kernel from Slaine's server I get an error that the kernel is already installed, meaning there is a newer kernel that came with the latest updates.

So still no luck trying to get broadcom wifi running. That's a pity because it draws way less power than Atheros AR5006EG/5007EG and even Intel 5100. I swapped these in to get wifi running but measured an increase in power draw by 1 watt with a power meter. It even gets hotter than before. So I switched back to broadcom bcm4312MCG. :(

Toshiba NB105

I have Successfully installed Moblin 2.0 in my toshiba nb105 netbook
run fine but, with some hungs an a slowly performance.
Anyway i keep moblin in my netbook to continue testing!
tks!

lenovo S10 Installation

Hi everyone,
I am a newb when it comes to linux. I am trying to do the network installation on my s10 and with two different images files that i have used in jump drives, I always get errors during starting install process saying

The File bluez-libs-devel-4.40-3.1.moblin2.i586.rpm cannot be opened. This is due to a missing file, a corrupt package or corrupt media. Please verify your installation source.

The file ncurses-libs-5.6-25.9.moblin2i586.rpm cannot be opened. This is due to a missing file, a corrupt package or corrupt media. Please verify your installation source.

Then i click retry and it appears to work but the installation never fully installs

Where should I go to download the image?

I found the first image at
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-moblin-install-from-windows/

The second image i found was from
moblin.org

If this issue has already been addressed in these posts i apologize.

Does Moblin work on older Intel Celeron chips?

Hi

I'm using my old Sony Vaio U50 palmtop and had it installed with Ubuntu, works really great!

But I'm really keen to get it loaded with Moblin. I tried with a previous release couple of months ago, and it didn't work cos it detected that the version of Intel Celeron chip as unsupported.

Anyone knows if the new beta release supports older Intel Celeron chips?

Cheers

I have a problem

this distro, did not install linux aplications, I try to install some an the SO told me that can not handle the installaion. some aplications was open office..

In all the rest this OS is really excelente I hope a better one

I think could be better with a easy way to get to our files on the HD

My netbook is a Eee 900HA, I have windows (because I need Visual Basic) and in othe partition Moblin.

I have a little pront some times and sess "your SO have problem" or some thing like that but It seems to be alright

Keyboard and touchpad not working on MSI U123

I just created a Live USB with this version. The internal keyboard and the touchpad of my netbook (MSI U123) do not work. External USB substitutes work just fine. I had the same problem with the previous version.

And a question: Has anyone tried to create a Live USB with Moblin using USB Creator or does anyone know if this is possible?

Zones

Hi
I want to start out by saying really like what you are doing. Have Moblin installed on my eee PC 901 as only os. Little messages pop up stating app failure quite regular but nothing major. Previously could get no wireless if base station was set for both WPA and WPA2 but seems resolved and working just fine now.

Wondering about 3 things.

1: Moblin dosen't recognise second ssd on start up it has to be mounted. The machines original os (xandros) and Ubuntu based distros recognised and mounted it on start up. Would this be possible in Moblin?

2: "My Zone" is not editable. Would like to be able to decide what appears there. People might want to choose which tweets appear especially if they follow many. Also being able to choose which web sites appear would also be good and getting RSS feeds in there too.

3: "Zones" seems to lose what could be its most useful feature by not being able to set up zones to hold sets of apps or documents between sessions instead of just an app switcher which you have to navagate too.

Overall really enjoying using and watching the development of what looks like an excellant and usefull os.

Dug.

TOSHIBA NX/78GBL

Today, I have installed Moblin into USB memory, And executed Moblin in USB memory on TOSHIBA NX/78GBL .
Experienced very nice GUI on Moblin!
Executed wireless, Internet. After resetting for japanese, it was very fine japanese font on Web data.

msi wind no wireless

Same here. using basically a rebadged msi wind (advent). no wireless option at all. connects to ethernet fine- typing now from it.

That damn bar...

I tested the system. A little too buggy for a beta but it still makes me happy: very fast, user friendly and nice to see.

There's one thing I HATE: the top bar. It always appears when I want to close an application. You have to use your mouse very carefully or that damn bar appears and you have to wait some seconds until it hides. I got mad for that many times.

I suggest:

1) Let the users move the bar from the top to the bottom of the screen
2) Let the users disable auto-hide and/or let the users use a hotkey to show and hide the bar (ie the windows key)

I hope you'll introduce those features. I personally won't use an os running onto a small netbook screen with a bar that appears every time I move the mouse to close an application or type a internet address.

20090705 version - no Wi-Fi on MSI Wind U100

I've tested last version of Moblin on MSI Wind U100 (rtl8187se wireless card) and Wi-Fi doesn't work. With previous versions everything was OK.

MSN in Moblin

Like many others i had waited for MSN to be added to a release of Moblin but realise that the system needs to be first tested to make sure it works properly before adding loads more.

However, i found two ways of installing this.

One from the software repositories search for msn and one of the library packages will update empathy with msn and other messenger although i forget which one.

Also, install pidgen from from the same place and add your msn account you should now be able to import into empathy.

i went with the first option.

let me know how you guys get on.

Compaq mini 701 Ethernet not works with Beta 26th June.

Hi, i have compaq mini 701ES that before beta 26th June works perfectly, (only ethernet, but with this, i had wifi working), and now, with this beta (26th june) ethernet not works, moblin cant detect my ethernet hardware (and then i cant make wifi works), any solution?

Thanks.

Aspire one

latest update installed cleanly, although took well over three hours (480 odd updates, can't complain here as I went to sleep).

Seems snappy and stable and, best of all, wireless access light now works!! (ah its the little things).

I'm now using Moblin as my primary OS on the Aspire One.

Good job guys

IM supported

It works on my 300$ cheap netbook, but IM doesn't support yahoo messenger account?

wifi not working with build 07/06 on Dell Mini9

I just installed the latest build dated Juli 6th. However, the broadcom wifi doesn't get installed with Slaines instructions anymore:

im using it on intel atom platform...

metacity using up a lot of cpu usage, moblin2 beta very slow

hi...
im using moblin2 beta version and it is very very slow.
when i checked , i found metacity process taking up nearly 60% of cpu usage making moblin2 beta extremely slow.
please help me in getting rid of this problem..

earlier i was using moblin2 netbook(not beta version) which was fast enough but i im facing wireless connectivity problem in it.
when i connect the wifi adapter, i find the required network and enter its ssid.
It shows as if it is connecting(or searching)but it never gives me an ip address or connects to the network.
if i connect a ethernet cable between the router and the moblin system,i get an ip and am able to use the network.
why am i not able tohave a complete wireless connection?
please help me in establishing a wireless connectivity.

Wifi not working on an acer aspire one ZG5

Everything else seems to be alright.
Alot of program crashes though.
Wifi will say connecting and then disconnect.
Any way to fix this?

same here

Wifi sees my AP fine and connects quickly, but then drops the connection every time after about 2 minutes.

Tested on my ASUS EEE PC 901

I've just tested moblin v2.0 beta on my ASUS EEE 901,installed on the 4GB SSD.
Things working:

Microphone
Speaker
Wireless
brightness function keys
camera
scrolling
volume function keys(not always)
suspend(not always)
Wi-fi function key(LED also works great)
Battery life(sometimes don't shows the battery)

Things not:

CPU scaling Key
bluetooth

The system is very buggy as a beta.

Eee PC 900 support?

I have an ASUS Eee PC 900, and have not yet had any success with the live cd image. Will the moblin image work on a 900? Whenever I boot using the live cd mode all I get is a blank screen and a cursor.

If I tried to do the boot and install I get this message: /etc/rc4.d/S99sreadahead-pack: line6: 1397 illlegal instruction mv readahead.packed /etc/readahead.packed /usr/sblin/liveinst: line 61: 1370 illegal instruction $ANACONDA $* kill mini-wm, pid =1387

Look at System Requirements

Look at System Requirements (http://moblin.org/community/blogs/tshureih/2009/moblin-v20-beta-refresh-...). In our netbook (i'm eee 900 user too) CPU is Intel Celeron. It support only SSSE2. It's so bad... :'(. But i think, that developers will do something and i, you, and many 900 users will be happy :)

Yes please! I really would

Yes please! I really would appreciate a Celeron fork.

eeePC 900HA works great

I'm not sure what difference the "HA" makes, not being a student of Asus products, but mine has booted fine on all the images since 6/15 (I haven't tried any earlier images only because I just got my 900HA last month).

Does Moblin has plan to support DMA 500?

Thanks

+500

does no answer from intel means answer is "no"?

Boot Up Times Down to 2s?

I was reading a post about the recent Linux Collaboration Summit here and Intel are targetting getting the boot-time down to 2s!

It looks like it is partly fuelled by commercial need from other mobile systems like car computers that use Moblin and also competition with other hardware manufactures (like Nokia) that have recognised boot times as a prime business goal.

What about other intel integrated laptops?

Why hold back? Some better support for various Centrino-based laptops with intel graphics would be more than welcome. Support for every intel wifi adapter that linux supports would be a nice touch as well.

Very interesting!

I've tried it on my Acer Aspire One without any issues from USB. I'm trying to get the nerve up to install it on my hard drive... I haven't read anything about how that is working for people (setting it up as dual-boot with XP). Unfortunately, I don't have enough free space on my external drive to ghost all 160 GB of my hard drive before installing this.

How has installing worked for everyone? Any issues? Can I safely install this without backing up everything first? (as safe as anything can be on a pc!)

I love the quickness of the boot and everything seems to be working fine..

Oh, I probably should ask.. In the event that I want to remove this from my netbook, how would I do this without formatting?

Keep up the great work!
Reggie

Finally tested it!

And it worked great in my Asus EEE 1002HA :-). Amazing, everything ran fine, and the UI is simply spectacular!!

Of course, this is a beta preview, there are still a number of things missing, such as support for the most popular IM services, and also most of the social networks. But it's a start... and I have to say, this operating system will most likely succeed!

Chrome

Re: Jens Jacobsen's comment of 25 June --" However chrome is dysfunctional, it does not remember settings and has no obvious way of managing favorites, search bar does not work at all but flash works great."

(I have not installed Moblin V2.0 Beta yet, but do use Chromium daily on Ubuntu Jaunty).

The Bookmark Manager on Chromium has been on-again, off-again, but seems to be working now. While not fature complete, I found that importing my Firefox bookmarks made Chromium far more usable. Search bar works for me.

FWIW, you might consider trying it again and using "Import bookmarks and settings..." I rather enjoy the Chromium minimalistic UI and the speed.

Moblin on HP 2133

Has anybody installed Moblin 2.0 on HP 2133? How to do it? Are there any tweaks to do so?

Please help me!

Build Upgrade Query

Does anyone know whether the updates option within moblin updates to the latest build or do we have to download and install the latest version... ?

I am planning to put onto a netbook but dont know whether to wait until the next build is out or not.

Also, does anyone know when the next build is due?

Am loving this

I installed Moblin on my Acer Aspire One (8GB SSD/512MB Memory) after trying out the USB Live version. Getting around the UI seems easy enough and once I'd installed Firefox from the repositories I had a web-browser that I could use. I also installed AbiWord for simple Wordprocessing but not sure I'd use it over OpenOffice.

I've set up the machine as Dual Boot now with eeeBuntu and dependant on my needs, I can go to either environment. If I want anything more than simple web-browsing I choose eeeBuntu. Otherwise Moblin is the way to go.

One thing I have found is that I can't get it to 'remember' my last Wifi network connection. It'd be great if it auto-connected to the last live network connection so I don't have to go the network connection tool. Maybe I'm missing a trick here?

Other than that, I love it. It's definitely staying on my AA1 and am keen to see it improve.

Great work guys.

MSI Wind

I just installed Moblin version 200090616 on the MSI Wind U100

The Moblin Install is just fine with no trouble at all.

Post install battery management and graphics works better than on any other linux distro tested so far.

However chrome is dysfunctional, it does not remember settings and has no obvious way of managing favorites, search bar does not work at all but flash works great.

Webcam is not working at all.

Wireless drops every 5 minutes (and takes half a minute to recover) during this time the UI is frozen.

The scheduler makes the system choppy, when typing it will loose some keystrokes and I'm only a medium fast typist. Sudden freezes happens all the time.

The keyboard only has some of the keys working, function keys and accelerators are not configured by default.

The various text input fields freezes the system for about a couple of seconds and does not select all text when entering the field (only about 1 in 10 times does it happen) and multitappping on a textfield does usually not select all text. You can therefore not use the system (for example browse) using only one hand but you have to use two when using a trackpad. The effect is that the user ergonomics is horrible.

Using a mouse instead of the trackpad results in the main menu keeps hanging (randomly) in the down position and hiding parts of the open application (and is therefore useless).

The system completely dies and then recovers (takes about 1 minute) where everything is frozen and loss of wireless occurs (the error report can therefore not be sent).

Disabling, disconnecting or switching wireless networks results in that wireless cannot connect ever again (permanent freeze, hangs during "connecting") before cold boot.

The repos does not contain important applications like openoffice or skype.

Installing anything from the repos results in immediate loss of wireless connection (!). you can therefore not install anything over wireless.

There is no obvious way to enable the "Web Services" features and functionality. There is no guide or information in the UI for what "Services" are supported and how to use them.

All hardware works fine with opensuse 11.1 so it is not that there is not a linux drivers problem, the hardware problems are specific to the moblin kernel.

The sad part is that some of the fundamentals are ok, and shows great potential but at the present state Moblin is not usable on the MSI Wind. I hope you can fix the problems.

Regards
Jens

AA1 ssd 8go

HI !!!!
i'm very suprised by this OS. i love it !!!!!!!!
it's only a beta but i'm very happy to install on my AA1.
there's some bugs but it's so easy to boot (few secondes) and very easy to use !!
unifortunately my 2 "lecteurs de carte"(sorry i'm french) doesn't work and my webcam too.
if anyone have a suggestion....
GREAT OS
CONGRATULATION FROM HAUTE SAVOIE !!

eeepc 901

just finished booting on my 901 (from pendrive) and this action went very quick. I have spent aprox. 30 minutes with Moblins latest 2 beta version. The internet browser is just too simple and primitive, tried to open a page that requires certificate.... no way, tried to listen to music.... no way
there is no way to get system info... you have to be Linux guru and find specific details through a terminal .... I did try to record voice and that functioned ok, Moblin did not detect the web camera, Moblin is useless for me if I cannot run Skype, Openoffice is missing too...
I hope these issues are considered in the final form of Moblin.

great distro but some bugs on Eeepc 901

Hi guys, you are great, I just installed moblin on my sdhc and it works fine.
I have an EeePc 901. However it have some bugs, I know it's a beta but it's so beautiful that you forget that it's a beta so you pretend more! =P

well with this refresh the problems are the web browser, wifi it's ok but the web browser don't enter to google for example...
another problem it's the fluidity, with the first beta live version there was more fluidity, instead with this new refresh installed on a sdhc it seems to be more slow.
and the new problem it's the media player, when I zoom back images it freezes.

sorry for my English :(

saludos! ;)

Works on Sony Vaio VGN-N130G

I have tested Moblin on a Sony Vaio VGN-N130G and works... however I find it quite slow and the Vaio I have used has 1GB Memory Ram. I know this is BETA, therefore I will try the Final Version on this same Sony Vaio again. I post this just to let you know it works on this Sony Vaio model.

Cheers.

Definitely making progress to release

The beta is really looking good now. Most of the bugs I found in the 19 May beta are fixed in the 7 June beta. I like the "weekly beta" cycle, gives me something to look forward to. Btw, is there a way to upgrade between betas? I'm thinking about dual booting and I'd hate to endanger my UNR install every week.

"Boot and Verify" still gives me the "checksum" error, no clue why. I managed to crash the network connection manager twice. The "time servers" GUI hung when I tried to enter a time server. Apart from that, everything else seemed to work. :)

OK on Samsung N310

I just got a Samung N310 netbook today and I have tested the LiveImage, most of it works :)

What's working :
- Network card is recognized and just had to type in my WEP key wifi is operationnal :D
- Sound is working fine
- Keyboard and trackpad was easy to set up too (being french I use AZERTY keyboard)

What doesn't seem to work (at least running from the LiveImage) :
- the MediaPlayer : I had a bunch of .avi on a USB key, but they're not showing in Media player videos for that drive.
- I can't setup screen brightness (not too big a deal, default setup is OK)

I guess N310 is very similar hardware-wise to NC10 that might explain why.

The MediaPlayer is the only downside and the real show stopper for me : does running from a liveimage explain why it doesn't work ? Or does Moblin need a codec update of some sorts, only available when you actually install it ?

Anyway, thanks for this great OS which will be my definite choice when those things are ironed out :)

Moblin Flickr group founded! :)

Hi there,

just uploaded some screenshots of my recent Moblin install on the Asus Eee PC 900A and founded a Moblin Flickr Group:

This is meant to be a meeting point for those who -like me- are less coders than users. Just to post screenshots of apps that you got up and running. Feel free to join!

Aspire One 110 8GB SD

My thoughts. This is promising but still some way off. The Linpus lite my son accidentally broke somehow at least worked. Wireless connects but is 80% reliable - last connected network should be automatically selected and restarted on boot . It's taken me time but the whole new clutter environment thing starts to make sense. The browser is more difficult to use than any other - the URL / search box (it's unclear what it is supposed to do) fails sometimes. I would prefer to click the top menu browser then find a google/other search box with flashing cursor as default.
The mouse action is twitchy. I installed Claws-mail (the only mail client available) several times but it did not start up. I like moblin generally but, for what it offers, it needs to speed up a bit and cover the basics a better before I can use it.
Best wishes for progress on a great idea.

What build?

Hi!
Just curious while I can't use wireless at all on the very same Acer netbook. What build of Moblin have you tried (I've tried up to 29th of May) and what encryption does your network use?

Thanks //Magnus

keep trying

Hi Magnus,

I have had a similar problem, select and it connects and disconnects really quickly. I had a thought it might be to do with the oversensitive trackpad - I can actually move the pointer without touching the trackpad! Although I turned down the sensitivity and it's more usable.

I found that if you just keep trying, eventually it will connect and not disconnect.

Perhaps the developers could work around this problem by putting the 'connect' and 'disconnect' buttons in different locations, so it was not physically possible to double click 'connect' and disconnect.

Regards

James

Not a problem with double clicking

It's not a problem with double clicking, it's a problem with support with the wireless card

Samsung NC10

Anyone know how to adjust brightness on Samsung NC10?

Moblin 2.0 is telling me “sorry, we don’t support modifying the brightness of your screen”

Also, how can I dual boot on this Netbook? I already have Windows 7 RC installed and wish to keep it.

Thank you.

dual boot

I would like to know the proper instructions for dual-booting as well.

Does your NC10 have

Does your NC10 have brightness adjust on the keyboard?

On my Aspire One I have to hold the 'FN' key, then use the right/left arrows.

Updating vs. new install

I have a question for one of the developers:
Can I update to the latest beta or do I have to download the latest image to be completely up to date?

MSI Wing U100

Has anyone been able to get the wifi working on the U100??? Please let me know if you have and how you did it. I really enjoy the Moblin OS but is useless without internet access. I have also registered to receive the Jolicloud private Alpha but have not received an email yet. :(

Use Bugzilla

Looks like the U100 ships with different wifi cards. I have a RaLink RT 2860 in my Wind clone. It only works when I use WEP encryption, Can't connect to WPA2. Open a terminal and run lspci to see what card you have or look on the sticker on the bottom of your wind.

Wifi working!

I downloaded the image from the site today and the wifi is working. I'm posting this now from my wifi network at home that has wpa2 security.

The upgrade is also working fine!!!

Yeah!!! :P

No success with the wifi here

No success with the wifi here too. I have Slacwkare 12.2 installed in my netbook and my compiled wifi driver works fine. I will try to compile it in Moblin too.

I connected throw wired cables and have problem using the updating system. It's claim that some files is missing. I'm dowloading the new image now. I will see if this problem have gone away.

BTW, very cool project.

EEE 901 Wireless

Will wireless be coming to the EEE 901? It kind of makes my computer useless without it

X

X

Eee 901

I do have an Eee 901, and wireless works...
As this is kernel 2.6.29, they are probably using the in-kernel staging driver, which could, and hopefully will, be improved.

Acer Aspire One - Wifi or not?

I've tried the last few beta images of Moblin on my Acer Aspire One and thinks it looks really promising, one thing makes me return to eeebuntu though; I can't seem to get wifi working.

When I open connman I see all wireless networks. Choosing my home network (WPA) prompts me for the key, it starts connecting but then the button goes back to "Connect" and leaves me offline. I also tried connecting to an unencrypted wlan, and the result is the same.

Is it just some versions of Acer Aspire One that has wifi working?(I have the old one with 8GB SSD and Linpus pre-installed)

945GMA

Just wondering, since the intel chip is listed as supported, is it meant to be slow as hell? The interface is incredibly slow on my machine with a 945GMA graphics chip. I'm wondering if it's my machine or if it's a known fact the chip is too slow for the UI. If the latter is the case, it'd be nice if Composite could be turned off for Clutter ;-)

Same here. I have 945GM too.

Same here. I have 945GM too. The response time is so slow it feels as if I am on a slow ssh connection. I tried surfing a few web sites but the browser crashed every time I tried to go to gmail.com. I didn't see basic features like find or right click menu in the browser. My overall experience was that the interface was too slow to be usable

UI is wonderful, I love Moblin

Clutter is super perfect in Moblin :)

Help

Is there anyone at Intel that would like to help me install on my AA1? I love early adoption, but am not technically astute enough to install and boot to Moblin. Can it be used with Sun's Virtual Box?

PS: I had to flash the 'Dell

PS: I had to flash the 'Dell MINI 9' BIOS into my Vostro A90 (the hardware is exactly the same). Otherwise the sound wasn't working.

I tried the 05/24/2009 beta

I tried the 05/24/2009 beta on my 'Dell MINI 9' and it looks very promising.

Things I noticed:
1) boot time is wonderful! :)
2) the look is very nice
3) the browser is unusable. I already installed 'FireFox Minefield' which is way better (e.g. plugins) but slower
4) OpenOffice.org is needed badly. Meanwhile I installed Abiword.
5) the wifi worked only after I swapped an Atheros AR5006EG based minipci-e card against the default broadcom
6) bluetooth is not recognized at all
7) the hole system is very unstable. For example, the browser and even some apps crash often.
8) sound is too silent
9) the brightness icon only works sometimes, although the hotkeys work fine

Verdict: I will keep it on my Mini 9 because thats my 2nd netbook :) It already installed some new updates via software update

>6) bluetooth is not

>6) bluetooth is not recognized at all

Arnie, I installed the Bluetooth pairing app from the "Manage Software" application and I've got my BT mouse working great.

And I too am getting a lot of crashes, especially since the latest update.

Asus 1000HE (N280 w/2gig)

unable to change time zone or anything

I change the timezone, but the time stays the same. Every time I shut down and reboot I lose everything I have changed. Entered my contact details and they are gone. Happens everytime. What am I doing wrong?

Booting from USB key made from Windows. Is there a permission that needs to be changed?

Thanks.

Install it first...

It's probably because the changes are not persistent on USB boot. You have to install Moblin then configure it.

Any way to make the USB boot persistent

I would rather not blow away a working OS, Ubuntu, in order to test Moblin. Any way to make the USB boot persistent?

Twitter + Facebook

Would be nice in the future if the twitter feed could recognize URLs in tweets. As of today, you first need to open the tweet in the borwser to be able to click on the embedded link.

Facebook feed would be very nice to have.

Yahoo Messenger

Would be nice if Moblin managed to get Yahoo to release a Linux version of their messenger with voice and video.

Disabling some features

I love Moblin.

I know this is beta software and there are a lot to wish for, but I wish I could disable some features I don't want to use. Like twitter and Last.fm. I'd really like to remove them from the panel.

N00b

Ok, maybe I am going crazy, but where is the power off/restart button?

You don't need it. Just press

You don't need it. Just press the real power button.

Lack of power off icon

I miss the power off icon. The one in UNR is pretty good (though it could be better). I usually shut down my Moblin USB stick by going into a terminal and shutting down from there, which feels clunky compared to the rest of Moblin. When I get around to it, I'll write a few small bash scripts (shutdown, hibernate etc) and link them to menu icons.

I don't press the power button because my Advent G10 (aka MSI Wind) doesn't have one. It has a nasty springloaded slider on the side marked with the univeral power symbol, which with some effort can be used to turn the system on. If there was such a thing as Wake-on-Wifi I'd use that instead. :P

Sometimes I shut down my G10, sometimes I hibernate it. Even if there was a proper power button, I couldn't use it for both states.

power off

just press your power button.

which netbook would one recommend for optimum moblin experience?

which ones are best supported and are also well built?

supported netbooks

I am running moblin on my asus eee 1005h model. Worked instantly, wifi included with no tweaking required. Boot time of moblin on the asus eee 1005h , to use a gamer term, "pwns(owns)".

Eee PC 1000H

Moblin runs fine on my Asus Eee PC 1000H. Most things work out-of-the-box. Sound works but seems quiet. It was quiet on Ubuntu İnstallation too. I've solved the issue by voluming up the Line-Out. I guess 1000H uses line-out for the PC volume. You can't adjust that on Moblin.

Everything else works fine.

A temporary solution till the release comes out

You can search for gnome-alsamixer rpm for Fedora 9 and install it. You can run it from terminal by "gnome-alsamixer" or from Applications->Media menu. Volume up the Line out there, you should have much better sound.

If you have problems with Google Talk on 1000H, just run empathy from terminal. Select Edit->Preferences, and check Automatically Connect on Startup. So when you login and connect, you should see your people.

Those were my only problems on 1000H.

alsamixer hint made my day!

Thanks a lot for the hint regarding increase syste volume by installing gnome-alsamixer. I have moblin installed on my eee pc 900a and despite it is still beta it beats all other distros in terms of simplicity, sexyness and speed. Love it! :)

Alsamixer

As Arjan told me on Developer mailing list, you could adjust the line out volume after running "alsamixer -c 0"

Aspire One

I have an Aspire One from Acer it is the ZG5 model, and moblin runs beautifully.

Moblin for Asus EEE PC 701

Is there any possibility of having a moblin por for the 701 EEEPC? I would be glad to learn something about it !

I'd like this, too. The solution posted is nice, but a bit too much of a hassle.

Moblin on EeePC 701: maybe there's hope yet

As would I! Could this possibly be fixed with the next beta?

On the eeeuser.com forum, there's a post on how to extend the moblin-image-creator to build image for EeePC 701 using the linux-eeepc kernel from array.org. Being the noob that I am, I'm not planning on trying my luck with that one. But maybe this is just what you're looking for, Alexander.

Speaking of which, the guy behind that post did mention something about possibly providing an ISO of his creation, if only he had some way of hosting it...

Check it out:

http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=35782

Tks for your help ! This is

Tks for your help ! This is what I expect from a community like this ;) As soon as I test this solution I will post here. BTW, It seems that the main issue is the kernel support for 701. Since Ubuntu dist. kernel release for 9.01 supports the 701 and fedora does not, I will be refrain to use fedora for a while ;)
Cheers,
A.

Boot from USB not working on eeePC 900a

I am trying to create a bootable USB for use on a eeePC 900a, but once the USB is created the system will not boot from the USB. I have tried creating the USB using the ./image-writer method and from a windows PC. I get the same result either way - the system will not recognize the USB as a bootable device. Any ideas?

try to do it from linux if possible

In my case, the windows method to create the bootable USB did not work. It went fine when using dd from linux.

hope this helps.

Samsung NC10 with HSPA modem

Hi

My netbook is Samsung NC10 with HSPA modem.
I instaled Moblin on USB Pendrive. It works :)
I try to use Moblin because I'm searching for linux, which I can use my HSPA modem to internet access.
Byt it doesn't work in Moblin too. :(
I understand, tht is beta ;)
Please, if it is possible try to make my modem useable.
Behind this:
- working - WiFi, LAN, Bluetooth, Audio, Fn key wilh volume + and -, 3D games
- not working - HSPA modem, Fn with Brightness + and -, leds on front panel
Fn key with other functions I not tested.

Thanks for Yours work :)

What about Google Calendar ?

It is very unfortunate that the calendar function is so basic. It's been a long time I have moved all my calendars to Google, keeping it in sync with my G1 phone as well as Lotus Notes calendar at work. The m_zone should be able to show your google calendars instead of this little crappy local application.

calendar sync

Unfortunately Google does not support SyncML access to their calendar, at least not yet. We're putting our resources on supporting the only thing that's even close to a PIM synchronization standard (SyncML) first and look at other solutions after that. Personally I hope that Google starts supporting it as well, it would make a lot of sense.

- Jussi, working on Moblin Sync

calendar sync

Google do support caldev for calendar sync and this works with thunderbird, couldn't use the code from that project?

Yes, me too!

I love the interface of the calendar app Moblin uses, but until it can sync with Google calendar, it won't be much use to me.

I support this

No more words needed...

OK, how ?

Great news. How do you configure this ?

I think it was an agreement that it is lacking features

I'd guess that was supposed to mean "I support the idea of it needing Google support," not "I provide support for making it work on the current version."

The "problem" with Moblin...

The "problem" with Moblin is that it is SO promising that I tend to forget its actually a BETA! If this was a "distribution release" then I'd have many complaints but I'll be patient guys...

Is there any place where we can have a glance at the vision the dev team has for the finished product?

Love it @ 1st, but...

Hello,

very nice initiative. I have tried Moblin yesterday on my Acer Aspire One, using a USB live image and all was running ok.
I do appreciate a lot the user interface, it is however unfortunate that several times you would go back to a more basic looking X-application which breaks the integrity of the look and feel.

What it misses for me to become my default OS (today I use Apple's OS X on my AAO - after having tried Win XP, Win VIsta, and Ubuntu) :

  • a "widget-like" approach to add new functionality and maintain a consistent look and feel
  • my online life is not only Twitter - I'd like to get my status & feeds from Facebook and LinkedIn as well, next to Twitter and Last.fm
  • why this browser choice ? I would have prefered Firefox, since I can then benefit from all the plug-ins. I should be easy to change the default browser

Will continue testing now...

Google talk

Is anyone use Google talk via "People" app at Moblin tool bar so far? Is it work fine?

after all those comments

i think your project points out one big problem: contrary to apple who controls software and hardware, you have to deal with a variety (we can say: a jungle) of hardware. you raised immense hope with your interface but you neglicted many drivers. in many ways you could have done better (rpm fedora drivers for dell mini 9 for instance) because your os is nothing without wifi. in my opinion (humble) you are still in alpha mode unless you think your os should run on no netbook at all. please provide us a new beta including drivers and hopes ! just because your project worth it.

HP 2133 (not working)

Hi there,

It doesn't work on a HP 2133 (tested as a boot usb device)

Hoping i can enjoy it soon on my notebook

Best regards and keep the good work

Eee 1000H

I have tested Moblin for a couple of days now.
I really like it.

My test computer is a Asus Eee 1000H. Everything works fine except the sound, it works but it is very quiet even on full volume.

I hope it going to be more stable, so I can install Moblin for everyday use. I know it is a beta version, but I hope it is going to be PERFECT when it is finished.

I'm from Sweden so my English sux.

// SweSG

Great !

I have been using Moblin for 3 days and I really enjoy it ! It's great to finally have an OS designed for the netbooks... Still, I have some comments :

- After a few attemps and some help from the IRC channel, I managed to install the flash plugin and the MPEG decoder. However, these actions should be easier (why not including something that automatically download the right decoder, with warnings if there are legal issues for some countries).
- I'm sure that this is already planned for the next releases, but Moblin should support more social network (Facebook...) and IM protocols (MSN...)
- Is there any plan about embedding an email client (with its own tab, updates in the m_zone...)?

I hope that this project will get the success it deserves !

(Sorry for my bad english... ;) )

HTPC?

wow - this would be the perfect framework for a htpc project (dvb-c/s/s2). future gui is here! :) anyone interested?

HTPC

Oh yeah, a HTPC running this OS will be great, I´m interested! Do you have it?

On Lenovo S10

I like it, it is VERY fast on the Lenovo S10.

The mouse pointer is maybe a bit too fast!

Installed in less than 5 min!

Screen very responsive, I like the way the "windows" close and open.

sound is working, screen res is at 1024x600

Only wired network "on" working, the Wifi, 3G and WiMax is greyed out.......hope they will fix this in the future

One question, is the JAVA runtime installed?

WIFI

hi !

Do you have any information about the wifi for lenovo s10 ?
Will they fix the problem ? or is there already a solution for that ?

have a nice day

wow good work, but...

i have installed moblin on my acer aspire one.
for the everyday do i need:

  • flash plugin, i cant install
  • icq, skype and all another messenger plugins from pidgin
  • browser -> no rightclick, missing strg + leftclick for new tabs and another strg + leftclick actions

please integrate this stuff yet, thx

AT&T Mercury USB 3G Stick

This is the best distro I have seen for NetBooks and really want to install it over a very tired (and sad XP), the only thing stopping me is that I need my AT&T Mercury 3G Stick to work. Anyone got any idea when that magic '3G' option in the connections manager will be enabled and if it will support the Mecury Stick?

Andy

do you get a solution ?

do you get a solution ?

some suggestions for Moblin

I have found that I cannot access to the unsecured wireless network
using the browser in Moblin. I doesn't work like in firefox in which you
can prompt for it.

Also,I think it is good to make moblin to support download feed
for podcast and intergrated it into the media center. Also , it is good to
add a podcast feed panal on the UI so that we can get the feed from our
favourite website and blogs in a breeze.

Furthermore, it is good to add the support some other popular IM protocalssuch as
MSN and googletalk in the Instant messenger as well.

One last thing, I think we should include abiword and gnumeric into
Moblin to make it to be able to do some simple office work.

Firefox

try using actual firefox just out of curiosity. You can run firefox by opening the terminal and typing firefox

it comes preloaded.

Where is the shutdown and hibernate button

I think it is good to have both shutdown and hibernate button
for moblin platform as well

I agree, not an improvement!

I thought that was strange too. Besides being disappointed that it booted as slow as the last version, the UI was so cluttered and unintuitive. There were no words to look for, or "start here" place to focus on to find the tasks I wanted to do. At least the last release used Xfce which makes sense.

It fails to be a desktop, and it fails to be a phone-like appliance. I'm going to use the Ubuntu netbook remix instead, which boots almost as fast.

hibernate and shutdown

if you think about it, most of the devices moblin will be running on dont get shutoff like laptops. also why is it so hard for people to just press the power button ? pressing the power button will execute "poweroff" and shut the system down, or you can run it manually at the terminal.

NO AMD SUPPORT

this distro is great and all my friends love it but i go to install on my amd athlon dual core and no support for this chip. what is up with this. i know you want the atom processor for its capabilities please support this amd processor i want to get rid of vista on my laptop. on my desktop ubuntu works fine and have not regreted it. i want this distro on my laptop so vista user will be jealous.

AMD support

No I don't think they do need to add AMD support. I think you are totally missing the point and direction of this OS. AMD has its own special kernels for Linux already. ALSO.... Moblin is not for laptops or desktops, that's not the market they want to reach at all. So on that note if you really wanna impress your friends, go buy a netbook supported by Moblin and install the beta.

WiFi on Mini-9

According to Intel on this Slashgear article (http://tinyurl.com/o3x5nh), wifi should work on my Dell Mini-9. However, it does not. Anybody else have luck with it?
~/jt

Dell Mini 9

I have the same problem with Wifi, anyone got this working??

Wi-Fi

I followed the instructions and it works fine. (i was booting from USB).
The instructions should be used if not booting from USB, as after re-boot, all settings revert back to no Wi-Fi.

Shutdown command

I see a few people are having problems shutting down. To do this open a terminal and enter:
sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now
the sbin is required as this is not in the $PATH (this was added in Fedora 10)

Shutdown command missing

actually as much as that command is correct, the shutdown command in general has been handicapped in Moblin. as of now other than pressing the power button you can also open a terminal and type :

su -

## press enter and then enter passwd then type the following at the root prompt

poweroff

## press enter
#### This is the exact same as pressing the power button which is also the exact same as clicking a shutdown icon.

Hi! Very nice operating

Hi!

Very nice operating system, I really like it. I installed it on my friends Aspire One. Here are some things that I think would be great:

*More wireless encryptions support, like wpa enterprise and stuff, see gnome's networkmanager :)
*Wider support for social services, like MSN, AIM, Facebook, and so on
*More codecs by default or easy install, for mp3, flash and so on
*Shutdown/reboot-gui :)
*3G support for external and internal modems
*Better default synaptics features (?) like two-finger scrolling, and so on
*Perhaps another mouse theme, the current looks only kind-of good :P

Many of these stuff I am sure you are aware of, I mean, there already is a 3G button in the connection manager! :P

Now for the good stuff! I must say, you've done a great job. Moblin is very different, but fits the netbook purpose perfectly! Should be a default on every sold netbook. I like the way everything is integrated, and everything is very consistent (right word?). I will keep the system very up-to-date, and I feel like buying a netbook myself so I also can use it! :) Cheers from Sweden!

I like ..

I like ..

Congratulations

I tried Moblin on my Aspire One, it worked great for a beta distro.
A bit rough around the edges, a bit more work to be done, but in the right direction.
For me (I know it's beta) it needs more customization options.
Keep up the good work!

wowowow!

I love it! really! this is gorgeous!

Great optimization of space and wonderful concept. As soon as final release come, it will be my OS of choice! I can summarize some pros and cons after some hours of using Moblin on a SD card.

  • Wonderful interface
  • Fast boot time (some 30 seconds from pushing the power key)
  • Great m-zone concept
  • Media player not working on my MSI wind
  • Flash plugin wasn't found and failed to install it through package manager
  • Mouse wheel doesn't scroll into the applications list

And finally two suggestions:

  1. I'd stick with firefox. With some add-on you can reduce the manu bar into an icon on the address bar, thus keeping it as small as you need it, but it's much more customizable. I don't think there's the need to build a new browser, when there is already one that is open-source and highly customizable (at least allow the user to choose to which browser redirect the request from the address bar, and yes! I'm plug-in addicted)
  2. I hope to be able to install more packages (Do I get it right that moblin is fedora based?), as I use a lot of Gimp and Inkscape and Openoffice, but I guess this is something that is going to come with the final release (we don't want another Linpus!).

Thanks a lot guys for providing such new great concepts and for making them real.
My best wishes

Gateway MT6729

Booted live image off SD card. Runs wonderfully! (minus wireless, but I know this is beta).
My rig is definitely not a netbook or atom-based (it has a pentium core 2 duo T2330) but Moblin runs great on it! I can't wait for that release candidate!

Where are the web forums for moblin on this site?

I can't get my wireless card to work on the MSI wind u100 with moblin. In the terminal i can't get ifconfig to work , so im not sure how to troubleshoot it, or fix it, I can't find wlan0 or any type of wireless card options, it just says its off, and i can't move it to on

Other than that, wow, is it ever fast and nice

A fantastic concept.

Clever UI, ludicrous boot up time, and m_zone is nothing short of genius. Even from this slightly shaky beta, it's clear Moblin is on the right track. However, it will take the implementation of several social standards ( Facebook, AIM, MSN, etc ) before anyone less than an enthusiast will want to keep Moblin around. Seriously, ask your friends what their Jabber handle is and count the confused looks.

Put AIM in at least. ;)

Dual Boot

Anyone attempted a dual boot with other OS? before I attempt it.... :)

Moblin 2 Beta Dual Boot

I have Moblin dual booting off of an Asus 1000HE along with Win7 RC1. No problems so far & Moblin boots much faster.

how did you partition the drive?

what was your partition scheme? I have Win 7 RC on a 160GB HDD, I'd like to keep about 80GB for that. I keep running into errors when I choose anything other that the "remove all partitions" option in the Moblin installer.

Moblin 2 Beta as part of multiboot

Yes, I have Moblin 2 Beta as part of a multiboot system on my EeePC 901.
It works fine (once I over came an initial problem with ommissions from the /etc/udev/makedev.d/00-base.files file) with no problems at all.

Problems with Beta install on Asus EeePC 901

Hi
I've played around with the new Beta booted from USB on my EeePC 901 and looks very, very interesting. A major improvement over earlier alphas.
However, once I installed it to HD, it seemed to freeze on boot. Boot seemed to be extremely fast, almost too fast to measure, maybe 3-4 seconds.
However, I ended up on a similar screen to the last alpha (light blue with some squiggles). But that's as far as it got -- no mouse, no drop down top panel, no nothing.
I tried the install twice with the same results.
Anybody got any idea what might be going wrong here?

OK, it boots now

OK, I've got it to boot now.
This link explains the problem.
The /etc/udev/makedev.d/00-base.files file only allows for /dev/sdb1 up to /dev/sdb4 and I installed Moblin 2 Beta on /dev/sdb9.
So, I had to add a few lines to this file.
Then it booted without problem.

Re: Problems with Beta install on Asus EeePC 901

I've got the same problem - eee pc 901. Works fine from USB, but when I try to do an install, all I get is the desktop image - no Clutter interface, mouse, or anything else! I am trying to install on the 16GB SSD and not on the primary 4GB SSD - perhaps this is an issue?

Love the concept

I am a Cloud dweller and feel like projects like Splashtop and the vapor ware that is the gOS Cloud and now Moblin are the future. For me, I spend 98% of the time in a browser and like the simplicity, function, and ubiquity of cloud computing.

I stayed up until 1:30 last night playing with Moblin on my eeePC 901 and found the experience to be fun, but definitely beta. I will likely come back to Moblin when it gets a little more refined, but for every day function I had to take it off and put CrunchBang Linux back on my 901.

The concept of Moblin is fantastic. I had no trouble with Ethernet, but the wireless worked on the live USB, but not after I installed the OS. Also, the browser seemed to be inconsistent right now. I know it is beta, but I was hoping for a little better out of box experience. I did find some very helpful folks in the IRC last night who helped with installing Flash. I can't wait to see the next version of Moblin.

Good luck Moblin dev team and keep it going!

HP 2133

Hi

I have a Hp2133 i heard that there are some issues with the mini and moblin has it been resolved and will it be worth my while downloading the image?

Will the Via CPU(1.6ghz) be powerful enough to run it?

Saving from the web using browser

All up and running so far on Acer Aspire one. As mentioned before the browser pop up for the download gets stuck.
I also cant save any items like pictures ect using the web browser. I ended up using the mozilla browser in apps/internet to download flash and pics ect.

Known issue

The built in browser cannot save files.

Persistent USB drive install

When are you going to support a persistent USB drive install so settings, program installs, etc are saved between boots? This is the number one way to test new distros, and you aren't giving us the tools to do it. As a result, many of the online netbook community are not testing your distro. Most of us use our netbooks too much to jeopardize our main hard drive with a beta distro, and this is one distro that can't really be tested properly on any old machine lying around the house. If I can't see how a distro behaves after the next boot after installing software, I haven't really tested the distro.

And yes, I looked at the process for using image creator to customize to get this, and frankly I can't justify spending the hours needed to learn that process when I'm still evaluating the distro.

The live-with-persistence image should be a readily available image available side by side with the full install image. From your own blog entries, support for this is already in place, so this should not be any hardship for you.

Additionally, your dd install instructions are not good - they make the rest of the memory on that usb drive totally inaccessible.

Thanks for your time, and good luck with the project -

I think you can

If you put the live image on a usb stick, I think you can then run the setup for installing it on another usb or sd stick as a resident system.
I think I'll try it in the week end.

USB PERSITANT

I've tried a lot of diiférent way ... booting one my usb intallable Moblin system and install it on an other USB key ... but that doesn't work |!! I truly need to found a solution and find a way to install a Moblin persistant and upgradable on a 4G usb key

If someone could give me an help,
Thanks

It does not work

I installed it on other USB-drive (4 GB) and after some grub tweeking, booting starts (from USB-drive MBR). But after 2 seconds appear following message:

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
[drm:intelb_panic] *ERROR* panic occurred, switching back to text console

My netbook is Dell Mini 9, SDD 8GB, with originally shipped ubuntu.

shutdown

Fun, very fun but, what can i do to shutdown your O.S ?

how to shutdown

this is how i did it..
open terminal. su, password is 'moblin' and then reboot ;)

no wifi (sigh) on hp mini

i tried this version from an usb key. compared to MIE it works as a rocket. wonderful so far but still no wifi. it seems to me it's not a driver problem but the way all network connection is dealt on the hp. i strangely don't have access to wired connection (the button is grey) and plugin an ethernet cable doesn't change anything to that.

wifi will work on an HP mini

hp mini 2140

Likewise for me on an HP2140 - no wired or wifi connections. This is a shame but I'm sure will be rectified in a final release. The UI is astonishing and the boot time superb even from a USB live image.

Having tried UNR this looks and behaves so much better. I'm looking forward to the final release when I'll remove Ubuntu move to Moblin.

Forums, Restricted Formats

Just installed moblin on my acer aspire one, looks pretty cool. Some helpful suggestions:

1. Now that you are starting to have more users, you should have forums and/or a wiki. These could have helped me solved the problems below.

2. The first thing I did was click on "intro video" which gave me a plug-in error for adobe flash. Trying to install the flash plugin from the adobe page doesn't work (the browser tries to "open" the file and gets stuck in an endless loop). Trying to install it from the add/remove software app doesn't work because it doesn't like the gpg signature. Finally I got it to work by manually installing it via a terminal. Honestly... this is the #1 thing many people will do when they try out Moblin! This process should be easier.

3. I haven't been able to watch any movies or listen to music on Moblin. DivX, Mp3s, and Oggs don't work. I am guessing this is because of restricted formats (error with /usr/bin/hornsey). I understand the free-format debate but the system is advertised for music and video playing. Installing new codecs, with proper warnings, should be a snap.

Thanks for the good work!

How to get flash to work

This is how I got flash to work, first go to applications and scroll down to settings and choose update your computer (password for live moblin is "moblin". Then choose terminal found under the applications-accessories and type:su -
and password. then type yum install flash-plugin

thanks for sharing this tip

thank you ^^ I can "watch" youtube at Moblin now...

very nice

i like moblin and will probably use it very soon, but i found a few things that will need to be fixed first. this is merely a list of some things i found while using moblin.

my computer is an eeepc1000heb that i bought at 'best buy' one month ago. i upgraded the ram to two gigs. i use linux mint.

issues i encountered:
1. my wireless mouse does not scroll anything except the internet browser. an example would be the applications>settings menu. (mouse is logitech)
2. the 'selected text' color in browser address bar is way too light in color. (theme issue i think)
3. there is no irc chat client(?) that i could find.
4. there is no 'restart/shutdown' button anywhere i could find. (i used terminal)
5. no user guide.
6. under power and brightness tab, shouldn't it be 'and' and not 'an'? (typo i figure)

these are just some of the little things i found 'wrong' and not meant to hurt anyone.

now, the things i really like...
-m_zone rocks! really cool layout and looks great!
-i like the bar at the top and the icons are really good. the effects are killer! although, i feel the date/time should be on the right.
-all the icons are really good looking and informative.
-i like the dark brown/grey but wish it could be customizable by user.
-i like the default blue wallpaper (energy) and the toys wallpaper.
-i like chrome but feel it needs more tweeking. minefield worked great.
-i am sure i can add deluge or transmission just didn't get to it. wife came home from work.

overall, i am very glad i checked this distro out. i will keep an i on it an keep using it. i am hoping to install it full time on my netbook. i used usb-imagewriter to install the downloaded image onto my usb drive.

have a great day!

Shutdown//Reboot

As RC mentioned below, I haven't found the shutdown/reboot graphical option. I haven't seen anything in the documentation also. For now, I use the command-line and the "reboot" command (sudo or as root). I'm sure there is another way, I just haven't found it yet.

Shutdown/Reboot

Hello Tom....
I tried "reboot" and "shutdown" command via Terminal..."reboot" command works ok...but "shutdown" command doesn't work..am I use the wrong command??

Shutdown

As root:
shutdown -h now

shutdown

I did try...
but it shows as below,

bash: shutdown: command not found

did I do anything wornog? >o<

open terminal and type

open terminal and type poweroff

Hi, every body.

And how about pressing power button ?

Why do you need a GUI to poweroff your notebook ?

On default eeePC xandros, the first think I made is removing GUI to direct poweroff by pressing Power button.

Wakeup, we are in 2009, we have ACPI, and script to make a clean shutdown by simply pressing Power button !

( TIP : the 1980 "PARK" command is not need to properly park the head of the hardrive ;-) )

Very Good!!!

First of all: Congratulation... this is gona be the definitive OS for netbooks, and why not ordinaries laptops...

...waiting for the buzz on twitter...

sorry for my english... greetings from Argentina!

Looks good

However that's all I can say for now, because I'm downloading at 2600 b/s; there must be tons of people downloading it right now as well. There needs to be some mirrors.

torrent

try the mininova torrent ;)

while torrents are relatively

while torrents are relatively easy to come by, it'd be better if there was an officially supported torrent for downloading.

quicker downloads and less strain on the server sound win-win to me.

Help~

how can I shutdown Moblin os?? is the only way to press the power button?

open terminal and type

open terminal and type poweroff

Samsung Q1U

when Moblin was first discussed the Samsung Q1U was going to be supported.
with Moblin2 I'd hoped to see a LiveUSB (or installable) build I could try out but ... it's not a netbook and it's not Atom based. Would I be wasting my time?

live usb

I took the img file and transcoded it into iso, then used unetbootin to create a live, bootable usb. went very well :)

OK

How do you or how could you translate *.img in a *.iso ?

Please give me some hint with all the steps for a newby...
Thanks !

.img and .iso are the same

.img and .iso are the same format; the only difference is the file extension. Just change the extension.

Eee 701

Looks nice, but it hangs while starting Xsession on my EeePC 701 :(

Social Networking

What are the possibilities that we'll see support for free and open source network services in the future? I note that the two supported now are ones that have popular FLOSS alternatives (Identi.ca for Twitter, Libre.fm for Last.fm) -- was that on purpose? Should be easy to port.

"Should be easy to port"...

"Should be easy to port"... lol
Come on mate, if you want it, make it

Take it for a spin

Thx!

thank you!!

i've been messing around trying to get the img of alpha2 to live install on my msiwind for almost 48 hours straight. can't wait to test this one out!!
