Moblin v2.1 Feature Summary

In addition to the various new features, this new version of Moblin includes several hundred bug fixes and incorporates feedback from users and the developer community. Much polish and performance improvement was accomplished within this release from the Moblin developers. New features in Moblin v2.1 for netbooks and nettops include:

  • Internet Browser. After much work, we are including a new internet browser application that far exceeds our previous browser performance and adds full support for features such as plug-in support and add-ons. Many thanks to Moblin users and the developer community for their feedback and contributions.
  • 3G Data Support. Support for 3G data connections using the Ericsson* MBM 3G modems. Support for additional 3G modems is planned for future releases.
  • Application Installer Integration. The Moblin Application Installer is integrated and provides a logically categorized list of applications that you can choose to install. The selection of applications that appears within the Moblin Application Installer comes from the Moblin Garage.
  • Clutter 1.0. With this new version of Moblin, we are releasing Clutter 1.0, the Moblin animation framework.
  • Bluetooth* Device Support. Bluetooth* device discovery and pairing now supported via a new panel in the toolbar, which supports Bluetooth* audio devices, input devices (keyboards, mice), OBEX file transfer, and using a Bluetooth* phone as a 3G modem.
  • Connection Manager. Connection Manager (ConnMan) has significant modifications particularly in the areas of performance and reliability. The new version of ConnMan now supports Ethernet, WiFi, WiMAX, and 3G.
  • Nettop Support. UI scaling is provided for a wide range of nettop resolutions, including the ability to show more information in the Myzone panel based on the available screen space.
  • Improvements to Instant Messaging. Improvements have been included for Instant Messaging account setup, integration within the connection manager, and support for transparent connection to your friends on your local network.
  • Input Method Support. Input method support is now included across the system.
  • Localization. Moblin is currently localized in the following languages (English, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Swedish, Finnish, Korean, Japanese, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional). We also have a community translation project where Moblin is translated to additional languages by the community.
  • In addition, Moblin v2.1 includes several updated versions of key technology components that the Moblin developers worked on with the various communities; these include the Linux kernel version 2.6.31, Intel Linux graphics driver 2.9, X server 1.6.4, and Mesa 7.6. We are also providing updated documentation, sample code and updates to the Moblin SDK. Detailed Moblin UX help documentation is included in multiple languages along with updated Moblin SDK documentation and sample code.

Share your experience with us through bugzilla or the developer mailing list.

Moblin images require an Intel Atom* processor-based netbook or nettop. For more specific system requirements and information on the tested platforms see the Moblin v2.1 netbook/nettop release notes.

Betavine Modem Manager for Moblin

Hi all,

betavine have released packages for their modem manager for Moblin. Should support 50 plus modems out the box, and auto configure for Vodafone SIM's.

You can also use it for other mobile networks but would need to add in their APN's.

You can find out more here at betavine.

we are hoping to update the app to work more closely with the moblin style guidelines. But for now it should allow a lot of frustrated Moblin users to get connected with a wide variety of Modems...

Would like to know what you guys think?

Enjoy, and kind regards from the Betavine team.

Nicholas Herriot.

Step 4
sudo yum install make
- By default there is no make - command in 2.1 and it is needed.

Step 5
sudo yum install build
- This too is missing but needed for this.

Step 6
sudo yum install gcc
- Again, needed but missing.

Step 7
To make sure everything is working let's reboot. With Moblin this doesn't take long :-)

Step 8A
rpmbuild --rebuild --target=i586 wl-kmod-5.10.91.9.3-1.moblin.src.rpm

Step 8 B (If 8A failed do this)
- Download appropriate driver from here: http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php
- Move tarball you just downloaded from DOWNLOADS to rpmbuild/SOURCES/
- Redo 8A

Step 9
sudo rpm -ivh ~/rpmbuild/RPMS/i586/wl-kmod-5.10.91.9.3-1.moblin.i586.rpm

Internet doesn't work at all!

Hey all,

My Netbook is a Packard Bell DotS.

I cannot connect to the internet. I can't use WiFi.

calendar application not working

Hi

I have moblin 2.1 final running. Everything works great. If I remeber from the earlier version, I should be able to click on the calendar date and it should pop the calendar for entering appointments etc. For some reason the date is not clickable. I set it up at the bottom in myzone. Is it possible to make the date that is the top itself clickable?

ASrock ION 330

Has anyone been able to successfully run moblin on the ASrock ION 330? After install MOBLIN wont boot just freezes on the login screen.

My questions after 2 months with Moblin system

1) Is it possible to use XFCE desktop in Moblin system? I´ve installed some applications, bud the main desktop is the same.
2) When I use Appfinder (from XFCE and Manage Apps), the application list is with mistakes (some applications are there twice). I need to repair the Moblin system, how can I do it? New installation, only?
3) What the small window with announce about mistakes during power on? Can I remove it for next time?
4) How can I play DVD films from external DVD? Totem or MPlayer doesn´t open it and announces, "I can´t find DVD source". How to play DVD or CD media from external DVD compact disc? The best help is in [matthi.repo], but not for this problem.
5) Is this forum moderated or depends on users, only? It is very important for me and other users, because many problems are in Moblin system, unfortunately.
Thank you
Petr

Love Moblin - Really Want to Use 3-Mobile USB Broadband Dongle.

Sincle loadiing Open Office, Thunderbird and Firefox I now have a really useful (and quick) netbook (an original Acer Aspire One 110L). Perfect for the train into work. I like moblin's simplicity and speed, and since 2.1, its stability.

My only gripe is that I can't get my 3-mobile USB broadband dongle to work. Has anyone cracked this?

installing applications with garage installer

Hi

I have moblin 2.1 installed on my laptop. I wanted to install an application from the garage and when I go the application installer from my zone and click on the application I want to install, it drops down to show description of the application. Beyond that nothing happens. Is there another method to install apps from the garage.

Thanks for any help

Dal

On the right hand side of the

On the right hand side of the screen there should be a button to install or remove the application. It may take a while for the buttons to show up. Click on the button to install or remove the application.

An alternative would be to use yum to install or remove the application as well.

Installer path problem

The installer cannot find the software resource or the packages. The following is the details of the error. I realize that I have the moblin 2.1 preview version which may be pointing to the resource path incorrectly. I downloaded the final version but for some reason, the windisk imager fails to create the USB boot device and the USB does not even show up on the boot device list. I went back and created the 2.1 preview version just to check if the problem was with windisk manager. The 2.1 preview version got created and can be read as a bootable USB. Is the problem with the 2,1 final release or is the windisk manager does not write the 2.1 final release properly to create a boot image. I do have a mac and I will try with that. Also is there way to download the 2.1 final from the 2.1 preview version that is now running on my laptop?

Thanks for any thoughts

Dal,

try this to see if it will reload the repomd file.

sudo yum update

then

sudo yum upgrade

this should bring you to the current levels on your distribution as well.

Thanks, I will look for it and also try yum, even though I have never used Yum to install. This will be a good learning opportunity.

Problem with DVD from external DVD-RW

When I want to use USB external DVD-RW for films (DVD), the Totem doesn't read it. The message is: I can't find DVD source. What can I do? I've tried to upgrade this SW. Nothing. Codecs are ok (mp3, avi,...). The problem is in DVD reading from external DVD-RW. But only for films, installation from this one is all right.
Thank you for you help.

DVD film and CD music

I mean, this problem is general. I´ve used Totem and MPlayer, the results are the same. When I connect CD or DVD with files (external DVD), everything is all right. Media software can´t interpret the media source (DVD film or CD music). Where is the problem, please? Thank you.

install problem on Acer Aspire One D150 [Moblin 2.1]

This Moblin 2.1 looked like the perfect thing for my new netbook. Wasn't able to get the CD to burn, but bought a USB pen drive and followed instructions to put it on a USB stick. Website doesn't actually says it is supposed to work with Aspire One D150, but I thought I would give it a try. I plugged it into USB port and it booted into Moblin Live. Everything worked ok, except WiFi, which is not a big problem with me. However, I cannot get it to install on my harddrive. It just gets so far and then tells me to check my media. I know my media is OK because I have used it for other Live installs before and since. I cannot burn it to a CD because the download file is too big for my CD's. [by 54 MB] I am normally using opensuse so did the install as I would a linux distro in setting up and formatting harddrive.
I would really like this to work. Can anyone tell me where to begin to start solving this? Or where I might go to get help? I have tried the IRC channel, but got no acknowledgement at the time I was there
Thank You
P.S. I notice from others comments that they feel Moblin is not yet perfected. Well, I ask you, what OS is? lol
In any case, my needs are not very big and really just want to use Moblin and my netbook for my business. I do not care so much about the social aspect right now.

XFCE or LXDE?

1) I've installed XFCE under Moblin. This possibility is in Manage Apps. How can I change my platform from Moblin into XFCE or back? During power on I can't change it. The Moblin behaviour is very different from other settings.
2) How can I write new accounts into one Moblin system?
3) Is it possible to install LXDE under Moblin distribution?
Thank you.

THE BIG PROBLEM WITH THE ZONES!

Moblin is a good os.
Boot quickly... and in general use are fast.
But THE BIG PROBLEM is the ZONES is just very hard to use on daily use, we can't switch quicly between apps, and we don't like to use alt + tab, in netbooks is hard to use hotkeys all times!
Please, fix that!

Do some way to quicly switch between apps, without need go to zones menu.

- Other problem is the principal page, a page with our favorites APPS, is a lot more useful than recent open multimidia and twitter pages.

- Support CLOUD COMPUTING, moblin don't support any cloud app. Thats easy to develop, just do like Google Chrome was doing, link to the pages and make run like a app. Jolicloud OS do that using Prism from Mozilla.

- Make a easy link to dropbox, the peoples who use netbooks, don't have a big storage, so a internet virtual disk is a good way to help all users.

- Use a Moblin Ubuntu Remix, is a lot better, and have much more apps than Fedora/ Red Hat.

- Use PRELOAD, i don't know why Moblin don't use Preload.

- Moblin when are running to much apps, including the integrated messenger... The system slow down a lot, and crashes a lot! This need to be fixed, i have 1,5gb DDR and get BIGGG slows downs, bigger than i get with Windows 7.

- Don't have ANY multimidia support... Just don't have oO. Like office too, to install OpenOffice you need a miracle... This don't occurs with Moblin Ubuntu Remix.

- The browser are good, but is slow, take much time to start. The pages scroll slow.

- My pendrive just don't work, and i think a never will know why.

- I did some tweaks, like remove boot image, change elevator to noop, etc. And i reduced my boot time with -2 seconds. So, Moblin have many configs to improve.

- Radio streaming don't work...

- The media player, need to find content online! Not only on netbook. Need to have an online integrated search engine and streaming.

BUT THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THE ZONES, IS HARD TO USE, SLOW, USERS JUST CAN'T QUICKLY SWITCH BETWEEN APPLICATIONS.

PLEASE SOMEONE READ MY COMPLAINS! I THINK MANY USERS AGREE WITH ME!

I totally agree

I ran Moblin (briefly) on VirtualBox for Mac back in June, but my feelings then are still covered by this post.

I came back today after seeing a video of Moblin 2.x running on an LG smart-something. The video and multitasking were quite impressive.. however on reading through the comments here today, there still seems to be an awful lot to be done before Moblin can become acceptable to a 'normal' public.

I am not an iPad fan by any means, but I believe the threshold for a simple touch-screen user experience has moved significantly.

Is Moblin moving in that direction fast enough?

Is this an OS requiring a semi Linux geek background? If so, does it have a chance in hell with a general public?

Mvh

i agree, Zones need a fix.

i agree, Zones need a fix. Push for the 10/gui style of zones with me. 10/gui was just an idea, but one person has already started work on it so it is, to me, the wave of the future in desktop computing. 10/gui will exist.

3G phone connections with v2.1

I can successfully transfer files to and from my 3G phone using bluetooth, but when I click on the connect or browse buttons in the bluetooth tab nothing happens. Does anyone know how I can connect to the internet using a 3G phone?

Sorry for this message

This message is in another place, I'm sorry. Could you delete it?
Thank you.

Moblin is NOT yet ready

Moblin 2.1 shows what it can be when it grows. The UI is fresh and nice. The OS boots quickly and shuts down even faster.
But it fails in a major way in multimedia, business and intuitive usage.
It has NO support for music or videos.
It has NO support for defacto office documents (exxcel, word, powerpoint), i hope they'll get Open office support soon.
And the UI looks nice but has major flaws with the zones and personalization concerning myzones.
Nice idea though, I hope some day it is usable!
Sad to say I am going back to Ubuntu NBR because of these issues.

Almost like a dream

It was so simple to get the 2.1 image to boot up on my Acer 1410 (11.6" - Celeron 743 1.3 GHz single core), and it connected to my wifi router with no config. So this is another nettop to add to the list (display: Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset; Intel Wifi Link1000 BGN).
Some problems with the package list: when using Manage Apps & trying to refresh the the package list I get the errors:
'Repository configuration was invalid and could not be read'.. & 'Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: adobe-linux-i386...' Any suggestions (excluding those involving an internet connection)?
Anyone have any news about support for Huawei 3G modems?
Oh and HNY BTW...

Homescreen aka myzone

Again, a nice idea but hallf way thought out.
Integration with Gmail is essential for the calendar etc nearly everybodu is using it anyway.
Middlepanel shows what music, videos and websites i have recently opened. So? Do you really think i watch the movie immeddiately again? Some better ideas needed.
Right hand side shows twitter and last.fm. Last.fm you can forget, it's a good service but not enough for that kind of thing. Twitter is ok but really Facebook and RSS feed support is the thing.

Concerning the upper toolbar

It's a nice idea and valuable space. The things that are not needed are:
- status
- people (these 2 should be integrated)
- media should be the media playet, not some trivial screen about mp3 which is playing, without any controls
- clipboard. nice idea but not worth a menu space
- better implementation on zones

I agree with this post. I am

I agree with this post.

I am asking the team to implement a 10/GUI style of Zones.

I have to agree with the people that are complaining the OS is useless. I am still running Moblin 2.1 because I love the boost speed, I like my twitter feed visible, and I think the OS needs support to bring it up to shape. But the OS is cumbersome, especially when I want to multi task. About all I do with my Moblin OS is watch online videos. I don't use the People panel because I find the IM client too cumbersome, it has no native Open Office support so I am not typing either. And if I try and mix the two ... I lose a lot of time shuffling through the zones to find what I am working on .. ugh.

Thankfully on Bugzilla they are taking those complaints into consideration.

Major flaw with multimedia

I love the new Moblin 2.1 UI and many ideas it has incorporating online and offline usage. But, Moblin has been advertised as THE multimedia distro for netbooks.
Well, i think the truth is totally the opposite. There's absolutely NO multimedia support at all in Moblin. Even basic defacto MP3 support is missing, so is the support for h264, divx etc.
Please do not reply about restricted codecs etc, we have been used to different linux distros fo rmany years and adding multimedia support is usually a simple matter with Ubuntu or other distros or it is supported out-of-the-box in some cases (Jolicloud).
So what's the catch here, why is it almost impossible to have the support in Moblin also?

Beautiful but completely useless - no ethernet, no wifi, no 3G

Cut out of the net Moblin is completely useless. As your primary target are NETbooks, you cannot afford to release a product that cannot be used properly on many if not most of them due to missing drivers.
On my Compaq mini 702 (same as HP mini 1000) neither ethernet, nor wifi nor 3G is working. They are all "unavailable" which will force me to roll back to HPs own "MIE" linux, where everything just worked right out of the box. Moblin is sleek, fast, and smartly organized and I really liked it but until you fix the network access it is useless and a waste of time.
Please take this issue most seriously - there must be millions of potential users lost already who either stayed on the fence waiting for this to be solved, went for another alternative, or worse - tried it like me and were utterly disappointed.

Same problem here...

Everything is unavailable, except for the eth0. It recognizes the cable, but doesn't connect me to the internet...

Hope this will be solved. I'd love to use Moblin...

Next account

Hi.
I have my account in Moblin (one, only). How can I write new accounts?
I need to be there as a root. I change my account in teminal, but I´d want to be as a root for the whole system (copy files in /etc). Where can I change my account, please?
Thank you.

Portadas de Discos

Una sugerencia, ¿por qué no añadir al reproductor multimedia la posibilidad de descargar las portadas de cds tal como hace rhytmbox o banshee??

Saludos.

on 1005ha

its an almost perfect release except for the inability to install the following:

gstreamer, VLC

Open Office can be installed, although the instructions are not for newbies and requires some basic terminal knowledge.

Still the same I hope to see a more supported release on Moblin in the future and an easy dual boot partition for it.

Cannot mount volume - External HDD with 2 USB

What can I do, please?
After connecting HDD into 2 USB ports, I have got a message - Cannot get volume.fstype.alternative.
Thank you.

if the volume is ntfs, there

if the volume is ntfs, there is no native support. you can compile and install the ntfs-3g driver then mount the drive manually.
Instructions and source code are here ==> http://www.tuxera.com/community/ntfs-3g-download/

Volume is ntfs

Thank you for your help. Is it possible to use easier way? Not compile, but install only (rpm)? I know, how to mount, but I don´t understand the way of installation. I have been Mandriva user, and I haven´t needed it yet.
Thanks.

You can find ntfs-3g and more

You can find ntfs-3g and more packages in my small moblin repo.
How to: http://www.matthis-kleine-welt.de/2009/12/17/kleines-repo-fur-moblin/

Mount ntfs?

The repo is perfect, thank you. I've used it, upgrade was OK. After connecting my external HDD (Maxtor) I can't mount it. The terminal message is:
mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /media/usb-storage - "my step"
mount: unknown file system „ntfs-3g“ - "the answer".

You must install the ntfs-3g

You must install the ntfs-3g package, with "sudo yum install ntfs-3g". Perhaps, I should make it a dependency for gnome-mount.

Perfect advice

Thank you very much. Perfect advice, everything is OK. I mean, this practice could be important for more users.

NTFS-3G I always build drivers

I always build my drivers, but here is a link that I found in regards to an rpm. As moblin does not package one for this distribution, I have not tried this information myself, so if it does not work, there is nothing more I can tell you.

It rocks on Sony VAIO laptop

I have installed Moblin 2.1 on Sony VAIO laptop. All hardware (Finger print reader NOT tested) works fine. Pl. have a look at my blog post http://karuppuswamy.com/wordpress/2009/12/22/moblin-2-1-on-sony-vaio-lap... on this.

Not Booting from CD on EeePC 701

When I select the "Boot from CD" function I get the error:

I am using Moblin v.2. If I understand correctly, it is based on Ubuntu Linux kernel. I have tried the EeeBuntu OS and it booted from the CD
without a problem. So, why does Moblin give me problems? Is someone going to fix it soon so it works on EeePC 701?
Thanks.

re: jarad

You could always PAY for your operating system and use Windows 7, or build a hackintosh netbook with a purchased version of Mac OS X.

The point being that while Intel did make an effort to create something new, this is not a money maker product, resources are no doubt limited and while I am sure there is a great deal of development effort going into this by the developers who are working on it... I am guessing there are not a ton of developers doing the work.

As far as the wireless issues go that I am seeing, they are LINUX-in-general, not Moblin-specific, so when it finally does get fixed, I am sure Atheros wireless users around the world will rejoice.

This OS shows promise, but all the things I am sure many would like to see will not happen overnight. This includes app porting (to make them fit the look and feel better), customized kernel and userland changes, and adding social network interfaces to the huge glut of social websites.

Looking at that (general) list right there, I cringe. I am a software engineer and I can look at that and see many many man-hours of coding and lots and lots of testing.

no free lunch

Fast? Yes. Useful? No. The time and energy I've lost trying to use Moblin has not been worth the $0 price tag.

Where's wireless in 2.1?
Where's application manager in 2.0? Without it I can't install the Moblin app installer, and cannot install new software from the (practically empty) "garage"
Why aren't Google accounts available on web services?
No "make" commands???

As a consumer all I want is a lightweight OS w safe email, "cloud" storage, and a good document editor/viewer. I don't want Windows bloat and I don't want Apple's high price. Moblin promises what I want, but it doesn't deliver. Jolicloud is weird in its own way, so I guess it's back to UNR--at least I knew how to and was able to fix things!

I could not agree more! It´s

I could not agree more! It´s not useful at all! I downloaded and installed 2.1 and it worked well. I use my netbook for a couple of things. Surfing and listen to mp3:s and watching xvid movies. All I can do now is surfing. The lack of support to the most common media types is a big failure.

I guess it will be better when Moblin goes from beta to rtm. But for now, I will stick to win 7 as I have not found an easy way to get mp3 and xvid working.

Intel GMA 500

Hello Mr Imad
Why in the heavens cant we support Intel GMA 500? Most of the netbooks available in India in the 11.1 inch & higher category use Intel GMA 500. Here is a list:
Acer Aspire One 751h (This One Looks Like A Nymph, Believe Me You Have To See It)
Asus Eee PC 1101h
..
..
A Lot More.
So I ask the question again why?
You are the "Moblin Steering Committee and Director of Intel Open Source Technology Center". I am very sure that you know how much Intel has worked with Microsoft to get it to supoprt all the hardware. Why cant the same be done with Moblin. After all its Intel's creation itself.
So let me rephrase my situation I am hunting a netbook which will support my OS & not the other way round!!! This must be the first time I would be doing this!!!. Now we know the value of Windows!!! It runs on any hardware under the sun (pun unintended).
This is the problem with open source. It renders a wide range of community unable to use the products (Linux is an exception now but wasnt always so). The race of getting builds out fast leaves a bad taste in the mouth for people who find themselves to be on the wrong side. This happens more often than not.
I will not be spending much time on getting my hands on a piece of hardware that can run Moblin v2.1.
Had the Intel GMA 500 support been there I would be typing something more positive on an Acer Aspire One 751h assuming network would be working.
A very pathetic situation :-(
Thanks

vlc on moblin

Hi

howto I get install vlc on moblin?

thanx David

VLC on moblin

David,

The only way to get VLC on moblin is to build the project from the source code. There are quite a few dependencies required for building VLC, but if you are intent on doing this, here is what is required

(This is what I used for 1.0.2)

libmad -- www.underbit.com/products/mad

download source then before ./configure you need to modify the file

(-force-mem option problem need to edit configure file and remove that option)

fribidi --
sudo yum install fribidi*

qt --
sudo yum install *qt*devel*

SDL --
sudo yum install *SDL* #(required for ffplay)

libavcodec or libavutil requires ffmpeg which is at www.ffmpeg.org

./configure -prefix=/usr --enable-gpl --enable-postproc --enable-x11grab --enable-shared --enable-ffplay

make && sudo make install

liba52 -- liba52.sf.net

./configure -prefix=/usr
make && sudo make install

cd vlc*
./configure -prefix=/usr
./compile && sudo make install

with ffmpeg, and ffplay you can now transcode or convert other formats as well.

Hello,
I have a problem. How to connect external DVD/CD and external hard disc, the both into two USB ports (power and data)?
I use Acer Aspire One.
I´ve tried the same way as by SD cards (including before power), but the way isn´t right.

Could you help me, please?

Thank you.

Help! Installation problem on EEEPC 1000H

Hi,

I succesfully used the Live Version of Moblin 2.1 via a 2 GB SD-Card.
Almost everything is working out-of-the-box, just as promised and reported by other users.
Only my USB-UMTS-Dongle doesn't work (ZTE HSUPA USB MODEM MF637).

When I connect it the OS just mounts the "Virtual CD-ROM Drive".
I also use easypeasy Linux 1.5, which is also based on Ubuntu.
If I unmount the Drive under this OS, it recognizes a HSPA Modem and gives the opportunity to select a provider.

When I do so running Moblin 2.1 in Live Mode, than it still doesn't find any UMTS modem...

I already accepted this issue, but the biggest problem is, that I can't install Moblin.
Only the Live Mode works.

I try to install it on a 4 GB SDHC Card. Most time it gets to the finish page.
After closing the installation and rebooting, I try to access the installed OS, but I get only a flashing cursor in the upper left corner on the display.
Pushing any key on the keyboard won't show any reaction!
The only thing I can do is to push the power button, so the system shuts down...

Did this problem already occure somewhere else?
Is there probably anybody who can help me fixing this problem???

Kind regards from Germany

SD Install problem

I just tried the same thing, but on an Acer D250 with a 16GB SDHC card. The install went OK, and I too couldn't get it to boot from the card. So I did a bit of digging...
It appears the kernel doesn't have the SDHC driver compiled into it. Now in Live mode, it loads an initial ramdisk image which does a hardware probe, and loads the necessary drivers. Problem is that the installed system doesn't use and initial ramdisk (probably to speed up loading). So the solution would be one of two things:
1) figure out the appropriate SDHC driver needed and re-compile the kernel, or
2) modify the installer so that it would detect if you are installing to a disk without a built-in kernel driver -- then in that case create an initial ramdisk image with the appropriate drivers.

Of course, this might not help you much unless you are a systems developer, but hopefully one of the primary devs can take this as a todo for the next version. Meanwhile, as soon as I get a bit more hardware ordered and get a dev environment set up for Moblin, then I'll see if I can take a crack at it and submit a patch (unless someone beats me too it).

Can't get the img to download :(

Hey, just wanted to let you know that I've tried to download the img file five times at two different times of day and it keeps timing out. Not sure what's up, but I wanted to mention it.

Problem

Anyone has problem with installation? I tried to install Moblin from USB drive (with help of Unetbootin) and even from external CD/DVD drive, but without success. I got mmc0 (and mmc2) error everytime I tried. Is anywhere on the internet step by step guide?

openoffice

No me había fijado que ya está openoffice en repositorios, muy bien! Ya solo falta que lo pongan en el "Moblin Aplication Installer".

Review (Dell Mini 9 & Moblin 2.1)

Now for a post that belongs here.

I just put Moblin 2.1 on my little Dell Mini 9. I had been using 2.0 up until a botched update process, ;_; .. bummer. Come to think of it, I think it happened the day the 2.1 final came out .. so you might want to check your 2.0's update dependencies and makes sure no one else feels my pain.

Anyhow .. the meat of the post. The new image is nice to look at. I already miss the 'Toys' background for the MyZone though. I loved that background!!!

The twitter panel should have more features included, such as reply and retweet. Again, I suggest you look at what Linpus is doing. They have some top notch implementation. I also suggest more of a Pop-Up instead of going directly to the page when I click on a tweet. The Pop-Up will help hold new features, and also let me look at the entire post.

I have a major problem with the Zones implementation. It's confusing and extremely hard to multi task with. I suggest a more common method of zone travel, the Compiz way. With Compiz I can just move my mouse past the corner of the current desktop and I will move to the next one. Zones should also have a hot key, Super Z maybe that let's me go to the Zones without having to move the mouse over and over again. The design idea is right, but the current implementation is 'not fun' and more of a chore than I want.

The new moblin browser is a much needed improvement. Thank you.

How about that task bar we have. Do we really need the Pastboard as part of the core OS? What I think would be an improvement is giving is some sort of widget factory, and then the pastboard go into that. It's just such a minor function .. so small, and yet it takes up a rather large icon and then screen.

The last thing I want to point out is the Applications panel. It is almost there in terms of form factor. Here is my problem with it. I have to scroll to the bottom, select the category, then select the item -- every time. No! EVERY TIME! Perhaps some columns for the categories to fit in would help with at least scrolling .. but also maybe a tiny little file that helped the OS remember my last open selection. please.

Over all what I am seeing is Moblin turning into a really nice netbook OS. You have a fan right here. I also see that the community is a driving force in it's development and that is a super bonus. I think Moblin is going to go final one day and storm the netbook industry as 'Thee OS to have on a netbook.' It just gets better.

Thanks Moblin team and community.

Bugzilla password

How about a Forgot Password or Reset Password over at the bugzilla site? sheesh.

Anyways, here is my idea since I can't log into Bugzilla. It would be nice to be able to adjust the lid power settings. With Ubuntu running on my Mini 9 I enjoyed listening to Last.FM on the go. To accomplish this I adjusted the power settings to the when I closed the lid it turned the screen off, and then I could still listen.

If you are concerned about power usage with the lid closed, you could also shut off other parts of computer. At least I think so anyways. Since all I really need is WiFi, the speakers, the HD and possibly a USB, the keyboard and mouse could be shut off as well.

You can reset your moblin.org

You can reset your moblin.org password, which will reset your Bugzilla password as well.

Great job, and a suggestion

Well, this so is great. I started using it over my 900a after w7,ubuntu9.10 and some other choices.

The only improvement I would really love is system encription. I tried installing truecrypt but it shows an error.

Verizon USB760 3G CDMA Modem

Hello!

Moblin is truly fantastic. Probably one of the best UX experiences there is.

That said - has anyone sorted out using a Verizon USB760 3G Modem?

I migrated from the Ubuntu Netbook Remix and was able to edit some config. files to get it working. But can't sort out precisely how to go about it with Moblin and can't find reference to anyone having done it yet. Can anyone point me anyplace?

BTW - I'm running Moblin on an Asus 1000HE EEE PC

Thanks!

JAS

Moblin 2.1 on my 901 (linux version)

Everything works well out of the box, even got Skype working from a Fedora install. One slight problem: WiFi always drops on closing the lid, then wont reconnect until I turn it off then on again.

Apart from that, all 100% better than Moblin 2.0!

Touch

Maybe have a touch mode that switches between the standard GUI and a touch friendly GUI.

Dell Mini 9 WiFi

I have tried quite a few times using Slaine's Mini 9 WiFi driver tutorial to get WiFi working, but can't seem to get it working. Jolicloud looks really quite a decent netbook OS, but until WiFi is sorted I'm going back to Jolicloud.

mine is working after

Problemas con Empathy

¿Alguien más tiene problemas para conectarse con empathy a jabber y a msn? Yo no he podido.

Very nice, but...

So Moblin OS is really a very fine, respect and thx for the effort and the good job. Unfortunately, wireless works on my Asus Eee PC 1005HA not. I also find it almost impossible that you can award a static IP is not comfortable. These shortcomings respeak a user-friendly, portable system. I hope these basic things are corrected in the next update.

Oh yes ... Apart from WLAN, does my cable connection either. For my network I have static addresses assigned, also I need the ability to hide myself connecting with WPA2 networks.

A lot of errormessages

When using the moblin 2.1, I get a lot of errormessages. Sometimes on startup, other times it seems more random. The messages I am talking about is popups in the lower right corner, the ones that asks if you want to send it forward to the moblin developers. Somtimes they concern mojito, othertimes bickley and so on... Usually I do not understand them, so I just press send, but really it would be nice to know if others are getting them to, or if my installation somehow got corrupted?

Moblin on EeePC 901

Hi, I´ve installed Moblin 2.1 Final on my EeePC 901 (XP Edition) with / (root) on SSD 4GB, /home on SSD 8GB and NO swap. My netbook is in standard form, RAM and SSD configuration.
EVERYTHING works out-of-the-box, I've installed it from a 4GB SDHC card.
With any doubt, this is THE OS for the netbook field.
Not everything is good for now, but don't forget that Moblin is in the beginning and in the right way.

Things to be improved:
- Calendar: on My Zone only shows Personal events, if you create another calendar, events from that calendar doesn't appear.
- Tasks: to edit all the fields of a task, need to first create the task with basic info, then edit to write the rest.
- Toolbars in some applications are TOO BIG and can't fit on screen. PLEASE reduce the size of the icones. See AbiWord for example.
- Brightless is always at maximum everytime system starts.
- The top four keys on EeePC 901 doesn't work (accelerator keys for SuperHybridEngine, Monitor On/Off, and the other customizable two)

Apart of this and some minor things, this system ROCKS. Go Moblin, Go!!!!
Can't wait to put my hand on the next release.

If you want to exchange experiences with me please send me an email to : risento[at]gmail[dot]com

Actualización:

Con totem si pueden verse los "rmvb".

Moblin 2.1

I've installed several of your releases, including the latest 2.1 on my Asus EeePC 900a. I've just as quickly went back to Eeebuntu NBR 3.0. This last time, I removed my normal ssd drive and used an extra ssd drive rather than formatting my existing drive so I could go back to my existing linux os if desired.

This time like the previous times, ethernet lan worked but no wireless card support found. The browser is an improvement though, over the previous versions, however firefox is still much better. The startup times seems to be improved.

Another reason I'm went back to the Eeebuntu NBR 3.0 is the amount of software that is available on that op sys compared to Moblin. Does all the software for Moblin have to be re-wrote or something just to install and work? Sometimes I've wondered if you have even looked at other linux distributions to see how their's worked, probably not I'd guess.
Anyhow, keep up the good work as this is definitely a operating system in progress.

My experience using Moblin 2.1 on the Toshiba nb205

Everything works out of the box except for the sound, which only works through headphones. The wireless works decently well, but after I suspend and resume, it basically craps out until I restart again. The connection is rarely rock solid, but it usually connects right after dropping -- that is, until after the computer has suspended. The experience isn't consistent, however. Sometimes the wireless has been consistent for three or so resumes before it finally craps out and warrants a restart.

The interface is beautiful and usually worth putting up with the wireless issues for. The myzone is a brilliant idea, and I feel like every other pane is implemented excellently. The Garage App Installer is a great concept, has worked without any problems for me, and offers a solid collection of apps. It could use more, but having a few good apps is better than having hundreds of apps that only a handful of people would use or are poorly made. As far as stability is concerned, Moblin has proven very reliable. I experience the same error message on start up that the comment before me mentions, but I have no idea what it is referring to and it doesn't seem to affect anything.

Basically, good work! Congrats to everyone working on the Moblin project. It completely changes the way we interact with our computers, and it's already pretty stable. I'm excited to see where this project goes.

The system clock is delayed

Hi everyone,

First, I congratulate the moblin development team for this great work.

I have an acer netbook aspire one model AOA-150, and install Windows on one partition and moblin 2.1 in another. From the first access after installation, note that the system clock was delayed 6 hours. Then set the time. However, after entering the Windows partition, it had advanced 6 hours, and to adjust the clock here and going back to moblin, the clock was 6 hours late again. Additionally, every time I log into the system, this brings me the following message:

Your system had an application failure

There is diagnostic information available for this failure. Do you want submit this information to the www.corewatcher.org website for use by the moblin deveopers.

how can I solve this?

Thanks for your feedback

Nicely done

I really liked almost everything about moblin when I tried it out on my netbook.

Too bad neither WLAN (RTL8187SE) or 3G (Ericsson F3507g) worked.

I'll check back next release, hope you fix it till then!

my Wireless / Audio

Hello,

on my Dell Vostro A90 the Wireless Card and Audio does not work.

How can i install the driver? I don´t found the driver on the page from Dell.

Give other mobiln Projekt who support this driver?

thanks

Moblin 2.1

Fast, simple, easy to use but it lacks several critical things: audio and video codecs, other social networks (identi.ca, facebook, ...), wireless stability, bookmarks in the web browser, and that's all for now. But really great job, I like it so much. Don't give up, I expect new releases with impatience. Good luck.

New Suggestion

In addition to the proposed modification of the interface: http://cid-7491f429f745aa3f.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/moblin%20%5E5b..., the other suggestions:

Sleep of the ethernet network adapter when unplugging the cable (windows 7)

Sleep sound device when idle (Windows Seven)

Gather all the system options in a single window, separate categories by tabs.

Allow annotations to the file (text / image /...) (mandriva does I think)

Ability to transfer settings from windows (bookmark ,...) in Moblin

During installation, view photos, animated by the presentation of Moblin

Add the possibility to share a file on the social network directly from the media panel

Add in the alimentation menu of the toolbar:
- What if closing the screen? (choices: off, standby ,...)
- Add something off peripherals that are not used (camera / memory card reader / ...) or find a way to extinguish and to relight automatically when you want to use ...
- Different settings (energy saving / normal)

Add an icon when USB storage is connected, when we clicked the application will disconnect if the proper key

Do not display networks for which no device is detected adaptation (network panel)

Rather than home pre-formatted, I think that an office which we can add custom widgets will be more functional and meet the expectations of most users ...

Off topic request

A forum on this site would be probably very useful and appreciated

well done with Moblin 2.1, i have been using 2.0 and i had lots of problems (especially with wireless), now it seems everything is working fine

Good Platform

Just checked, I was looking for a similar platform for a long time. That too on MID's. I am specially interested in IVI and hope that this platform will give us a good product at the end of its development.

Most of the expectations are already listed by fellow moblinians...But I would like to see the support of ION chipset which will make me use it for my HTPC as well. This is very essential for playback of Full HD movies.

I haven't tested as I was just doing a test run on a Intel Atom board with just RAM on it. I just byte copied the image to USB stick. I though I can use it to boot and work and store all my settings, But as soon as I reboot, all my settings are lost. Hope I am doing something wrong.

Also I am looking for a application which can be connected to my home network automation tool.

I was most impressed with the calc, which gave me the bit patterns for value I entered, this I have been doing using an excel sheet all these days. It was a nice inclusion.

looks great!

i was looking something like moblin, but there is some issues yet, by example:
- more customizable integration with social networks (twitter, facebook, others)
- pasteboard has not any real function, ctrl c / ctrl v works much better
- NTFS support, some people has external hd and usb drives in ntfs, like me like rest.
- MP3 support (as a comment above), all people around the world use it!, but i reccomend it would be part of the garage restricted apps.
- Google calendar integration
- a more useful media suite, music player or video player, it usually confuse people using it
- an option to clear my browser history or recent activity, some people is paranoic about privacy (LIKE ME)

great work!

congrats :)

Suggestion

I am currently working on several remodeling suggestions here or you see a judge if they are interesting or not ...

no wifi on hp mini 1035 nr with broadcom driver.

could someone comment how to fix the wifi broadcom driver in moblin 2.1?
thx

Nice to Have

Dell Mini 10V wireless working (broadcomm drivers and bluetooth)
Multiple user support
Sync for iCal and Mac address book

does rtl8187se can connect ?

my ap is share and open ,no password.

moblin can find out but connect failed

my wireless card is RTL8187se PCI-E

I have the same problem. I

I have the same problem with the same wireless card.
I have an Advent 4211c netbook (MSI Wind U100 clone)
I have an open network and can't connect it. If you digit CTRL+ALT+F8 you will see all error regarding "R8180 software sw"...
No found solution

Anyway, Moblin 2.1 is really AMAZING!

what i need

in the next releases the following things are needed:
- adjusting brightness on the Samsung NC10
- NTFS support.
- MP3 and XviD playback, out of the box.

Major fail

Still no GMA500 support? And still no Dell mini 10v wireless support? I thought this was Intel's project, but they don't even support the GMA500. This is the same GPU in the new PineView chipset. Wonder if Intel will ever provide a decent 3D driver for the GMA500?

Toshiba Mini NB205

Any information on this as far as compatibility, I HAVE to have Wireless working. Thanks.

Good work but a lot of things make... (Part 3)

- Show the number of new message (email and social networks) in the bar as on the iPhone

- Contact: Separate contact the personal professional with Tab

- Contact: Add a tab last discussion that summarizes the latest exchange with the person (Messenger / Mail / social networks)

- Contact: Add fields date of birth, and automatically schedule the anniversary in the calendar

- Contact: Allow sync with mobile platform and the backup (mobile me (apple) / My phone (microsoft) /...)

- Mail: Before each show a mail envellope open if the mail is read and closed if it is unread (Precission after just the sender, date and topic ...)

- Show the mail form letter like the HTC phone http://www.hardmicro.fr/uploads/photos/5040.jpg

- Add to the internet radio mediaplayer (retrieving the list of countries of the user

- Contact: Click on the address of the person opens the location on google map ... In the mail window opens a new mail ...

- Make a list of contacts can form directories on phones

- Rather than making all social networks together to make a kind of tab as on the HTC HD2 (http://www.slashgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/HTC_HD2_Windows_Phon...), a tab myspace, a facebook (changing the tab in passing on the logo)
By default all are then activate a menu option to disable those that the user does not. http://www.slashgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/HTC_HD2_Windows_Phon...

- If Windows is already on the PC, Moblin offers automatically install both OS side by side.

- Add the ability to migrate all your documents and settings from your Windows partition as well as encrypt your personal files.

Nice Work !!!

it would be possible to integrate with kaffeine ? sorry for my bad englisch

Good work but a lot of things make... (Part 2)

Power management:

- Add a decrease in the backlight after a certain idle time (except when playing a video)
- Add standby screen after a certain idle time (except when playing a video)
- Disable Wifi/3G/Bluetooth at a threshold of remaining battery
- Enable bluetooth for a limited duration (3 min on my sony ericsson)

Interface:

- Media Panel: show an intermediate screen asking if you want music, videos or images (one is the kind of blackberry http://www.graphmobile.com/photos/test/blackberry-8900-curve-s29.jpg )
- Garage: Let users comment on the applications (have a login moblin.org) / View screenshot of the application when selected the application
- Review interface contact manager, to a style of it http://www.hardmicro.fr/uploads/photos/4908.jpg

- Add compatibility with GMA 500, Nvidia and ATI
- Compatibility Apple Remote ???
- Make a doc on the netbook compatible such http://doc.fedora-fr.org/wiki/Ordinateurs_portables_:_Acer

Wireless problem

I'm running 2.1 on a EEE 901 and was unable to connect to my wireless connection. A little experimentation showed I could connect if there was no security enabled, but the connection hung on association with WEP or WPA

Works great

Congrats, it works great and totally configured on an eeePC 1005. Everything works out of the box!

But (there is always a but):

- No NTFS! That is madness. Madness!
- Bluetooth still appears if you don't have it.
- No Gmail calendar sync (I know this is not moblin's fault, but google) Have you look at evolution-webcal? You don't even have to open evolution in order to have the gnome date applet to show your dates
- What about Blueman? It's really powerful for Bluetooth and has a nice interface that can be adapted easily (I guess :P )
- Mp3, Divx/Xvid are a necessity in every computer accross the globe. If you want people to keep using it, it has to happen. Maybe go the ubuntu way (1 click, restricted extras install?)
- NTFS! Seriously, why there is no ntfs support?
- Pidgin. It supports video and audio with the new releases. It's perfect for a netbook/laptop with their integrated cameras/mics. I know it works but it needs to be integrated in myzone and in contacts!

Nothing else. Well yes, one last thing. NTFS!

:)

Cheers

Geat, except for one thing

Hi!er

I love it, althogh Moblin is not finished yet.

One thing is that Moblin forgets the settings for my WLAN on every boot. My WLAN is invisibe, so I have to enter all settings manually after every boot.

Mixed success...

I've pulled down this release and I'm running it on an Asus 1000HE. There are aspects of Moblin that I really like, and that have appealed to me since the project's earlier releases. This is the first version I've had anything bordering on success in playing with. I can finally connect to my wireless network, which is one step closer to having something I can really evaluate...

A couple of questions:
- How can I globally disable IPv6? In order to get the Web browser to see the outside world, I had go into the about:config page on the browser to disable IPv6 -- after which it worked like a charm. Unfortunately, Empathy also won't connect to anything where I have an account and my hunch is that it is bumping into something much the same. Thoughts?
- Is there a way to make some of the UI elements smaller? Specific examples would be small icons on the application toolbars, smaller fonts on the apps themselves (e.g., menus), and slimmer scroll bars? For an interface designed for small screens like netbooks, some of those feel monstrously large and wasteful. Right now, I'm running Linux Mint on this same box with a Gnome theme with very narrow scrollbars and small fonts and it is much more efficient in terms of the space the UI itself takes away from the applications.

This is great work! I'm excited by the progress I see!

some suggestions

Awesome, great job! I really like Moblin.
I've some suggestions that I hope could be useful:
* add support for audio and video codecs (MP3, DIVX etc...). These codecs are not installed by default, and this could be right, but why don't give the possibility to download them easily through an apposite repository or the Moblin garage? This could be a limit especially for not experienced user.
* Social network integration is a great thing, but currently it supports only Twitter and Last.fm. Is it possible to add support for Facebook and other social networks?
* in MyZone could be useful add a mail monitoring and notification. It could be nice integrating something like mailnotify and to give the possibility to keep monitoring almost all the mail services freepops could be useful too;
* regarding hardware support, I've noticed that, with my Acer Aspire ONE, the touch-pad is too sensible. I've set it using the apposite tool but with no significant changes.
* what about an official forum? Why only the mailing-list?

Good work but a lot of things make...

My suggestion:

- Add a field to put custom widgets (weather / clock /...)
- Add icons to the categories of applications (application panel)
- Add a button to stop / sleep / restart / hibernate
- Separate different type of network (WLAN, 3G bluetooth) in different accordion
- Reorganize the way to contact MSN and move the status of the messenger in the same window, and keep the other only for everything that is social networking
- Make a system update just like jolicloud (bottom image) http://www.jolicloud.com/images/screenshots/dashboard.updates.png
- Notify new update, and download them automatically if the option is enabled (add a download function when the computer does not use
- Making compatible social networks a facebook / Windows Live / Skyrock Profile / Yahoo Profile / Myspace /...
- Setting brightness Screen / time before standby in power options and different level "performance /
energy saving and an option to go directly into power savings when the netbook is disconnected
- Hide icon when Bluetooth is off or that any Bluetooth enabled device
- Add support NTFS (Comment http://blog.admin-linux.org/distribution/moblin-2-1-netbook-os-is-out)
- Add wifi Dell mini 9 (Inspiron 910), mini 10v, MSI Wind U100, U100 Plus, U120, Lenovo S10, Samsung N130, HP mini 1001, 1010 and 1120NR
- Add compatibility of Asus EEE 701 and EEE 900
- Improve the multitasking, a shortened change window would be nice (clubic comment)
- Show notes for user programs (Garage)
- Expanding the application list: Open Office / Wormux / Filezilla / VLC / aMSN / Opéra / Skype / Amarok / Supertux
- Sort programs install programs available (garage)
- Redesign a new wallpaper
- Add multitouch support
- Add a system to assess the battery time remaining
- Add a mail icon in the task bar that flashes when an email receive
- My fan does not run on Moblin, the pc goes off and heater

Any idea how to get GStreamer Plugins installed?

Just re-installed the new 2.1 image now I cannot get MP3's to play. tried installing GStreamer from the "Manage Apps" application to no avail. Also tried downloading the codecs and installing following previously discussed instructions but I am getting errors in terminal mode.

how to install gstreamer codecs

You just need to follow this step by step guide from the following site:

http://www.elotrolado.net/hilo_how-to-instalar-codecs-en-moblin-2-1_1325670

I translate briefly what it says:

1) Just write the following code in the terminal:

sudo yum install gcc flex bison make diffutils glib2-devel pango-devel cairo-devel liboil-devel alsa-lib-devel libtheora-devel libvorbis-devel libogg-devel

2) Download the files that are listed in the website from the following source:

http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/src

3) Once you have downloaded those files, you extract all of them:

tar xzf "name of file".tar.gz (I'm assuming that those files are saved in your personal folder, NOT in the Downloads folder)

Now, you should have six folders.

Then, you enter in every folder (through the terminal : cd "name of the file") and write the following code:

./configure --prefix=/usr
make
sudo make install

Repeat the process in every folder. Start installing gstreamer and gst-plugins base, then you can install the rest of them.

When you have installed all of them, reboot.

Actually, I got the MP3

Actually, I got the MP3 problem fixed using the Fluendo codec. Now I just need to solve the video (avi/xvid) problem.

Moblin on an Asus R1F notebook

I can confirm that moblin v2.1 works on a Asus R1F tablet notebook, spec is 1gb ram, intel core 2 duo (presuming SSE2), 160gb HDD, DVD Writer.

Working like a charm, had to re-enable the primary HDD after install as it got disabled as a boot option in the bios somehow ?!?.

One request, a web service for facebook would be a great addition.

Awesome O/S, keep up the great work.

"Takk..." by Sigur Rós?

Thumbnail at (3,3) in the screenshot, it that "Takk..." by Sigur Rós? Cool album.

It totally is! EXCELLENT

It totally is! EXCELLENT album (The song my wedding party and my bride walked down the isle to was "Glosoli") Way to go Moblin.

I love the concept of Moblin, but I feel that is is still a bit too underdeveloped. I work on a University Campus and have a handy Eee900a (thanks to Woot!) currently running UNR 9.10. I had Moblin 2.0 for a while but it was lacking in customization and in WPA2 Enterprise support (which this University, and most Universities I assume, use).

One thing I really noticed about Moblin was how fast it was. I clocked it booting up to full on usage in 27 seconds. And on top of that, the over all OS was blazing fast on my little Atom processor. Very impressive.

Until it is more user-customizable though, I don't think it is ready to be my primary OS on my netbook. I agree with some of the other comments about integrating more social networks. I also hope that this new 2.1 release supports Google Calendar and Google ToDo. Probably my biggest issue with Moblin was the Pasteboard. I find it completely unnecessary and inefficient when today's world is so keen to basic ctrl+c ctrl+v. I have no doubt, however, that it will soon be a leading netbook OS.

Great job!

Great job!
I hope to have the support to other usb 3G modem (like Huawei , Onda, etc.) soon.

Also hoping for a 3g support

Since I only have a 3g connect, using moblin has its limitations. Have a embedded sierra 8775 and hoping there will come some updates that support 3g.
