Hi Everyone

I'm sure you've heard the news: Moblin and maemo are merging! We are taking the best pieces from these two open source projects and are creating the MeeGo software platform. Both teams have worked for a long time to support the needs of the mobile user experience - and MeeGo will make this even better. We want it to be fun, focused, flexible, technically challenging, and ultimately, something that can change the world.

We all use mobile devices every day. The power and capability of handhelds has reached astounding levels - netbooks have been a runaway success - and connected TVs, tablets, in-vehicle infotainment, and media phones are fast growing new markets for devices with unheard of performance. Our goal is to develop the best software to go with these devices. The teams behind maemo and Moblin have plenty of experience and even more ideas on how to make things better - and together we will create something special.

So what does this mean for Moblin and its community? It's a huge opportunity. There are some changes (and those are always scary), but I think they are all for the better. Things will quickly shift to the new site, but from a technology point of view, migrations should be smooth. Especially if you are an application developer; everything you have done so far should continue to work - and with Qt and its development environment there are even more and easier options available to develop new and exciting apps for MeeGo.

The MeeGo website is still evolving - you'll run into a few "coming soon" pages as we pull all the content together and get things ready for our first project release in the second quarter. But there's already a lot to see - and a community to join! Please take a look - and come back often as we approach that first release.

We really want to hear from you. Be in on IRC, on our developer mailing list, or through bugzilla. MeeGo is an open project and it will be successful through its developer community. It's my personal goal to make sure that we can all together be successful. And have fun.

The Moblin™ project steering committee today announces the project release of Moblin v2.1 for Intel Atom* processor-based netbooks and nettops. This project release includes the broadest feature additions, customer requested improvements and overall polish to date. With this community release you will see significant feature additions and improvements, including enhanced browser functionality and plug-in support, UI enhancements, support for 3G data connections, Bluetooth* device management, input method support for localized languages, integrated application installer for the Moblin Garage, performance and stability improvements, and additional overall help and documentation.

Download the Moblin v2.1 netbook and nettop image and experience the release for yourself, or watch the Moblin overview video, or take a look at the screen shots. Moblin images require an Intel Atom* processor-based netbook or nettop. The Moblin steering committee is pleased to announce three exciting new developments within the Moblin project.

• The project release of Moblin v2.0 for Intel Atom* Processor based netbooks.
• A preview of the Moblin Garage and Moblin Application Installer.
• A community preview release of Moblin v2.1 for Intel Atom* Processor based netbooks and nettops for early development.

Moblin v2.0

The project release of Moblin v2.0 is now available. With this community release you can expect to see OSVs and OEMs shipping products based on Moblin v2.0 for netbooks. Moblin v2.0 features a rich user interface that was developed from the ground up, for netbook form factors and usage models, to provide an outstanding visual user experience that integrates internet browsing, media consumption, and social networking. Download Moblin v2.0 and experience it for yourself.

The Moblin Garage and Moblin Application Installer

You can now browse and easily install new applications on your Moblin based netbook, using the Moblin Garage and Moblin Application Installer. This is an early preview release of the Moblin Application Installer and it is still in active testing and development. Preview the Moblin Garage and Moblin Application Installer by taking it for a test drive.

Moblin v2.1

Moblin v2.1 will be an incremental release over Moblin v2.0 and is the next release stream for adding new features and developments. Moblin v2.1 will be used as the base for future new user experience support for Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs), in-vehicle infotainment (IVI), and embedded devices, such as media phones. The release target for Moblin v2.1 for netbooks and nettops is expected to release to the community in Q4 2009.
